Part of the Merlin sale. Intending to build the bargain 275 carbon mega in full 27.5, using the bargain fox 36 factory(might as well). I have to buy something, might as well be these tyres, though I'm probably completely wrong, so educate me before i hit the 'empty bank' button.

Tyre choice is 2.35 rear(max on the mega is 2.5, so no problems) and 2.6 on the front. It's the supergravity versions.

.

Im actually thinking of selling this bike once complete, and I think given its history 'MEGAvalanche', would be the ideal choice for anyone looking for a bike for said race. Spec is all Hope wheels(pro5 fortus 30 SC)/brakes(T3 V4)/pedals/stem, GX drivetrain/fox fork and transfer PE dropper.

I'm also intending on throwing in the 160mm lyrik, this like every other part im putting on is new and unused. If they want to run as a mullet, thats their affair. HA is about 63.5 or a bit under so I reckon thats ok really 😕

So I just want to get it built and sorted and reckon those tyres are going to be an ok choice, only theres plenty here with more racing experience then I have, which is none 😆 So speak up.

Humming, hawing and sucking air through teeth is encouraged.

Hand dampf on the front isn’t the best choice for most things. Would stick a magic Mary on there if it has to be the same brand. Or maybe that new Tacky Chan tyre.

I used to use a HD on the front of my old solaris and found it pretty good. Summer trail conditions though, gnarlier terrain or conditions it'd be on the back with a MM up front as above.

I've a magic mary but it was in 29er guise. Would have added it in with the lyrik. Info taken on board and I've changed the order for the MM as front, though its only 2.4

Ta 🙂

New bikes are getting discounted all over the place (as you know given how you got the frame). Can't imagine you getting good money for a second hand older model with 650b wheels.

I also agree with putting something like a Magic Mary on the front

I hear what you're saying, but its not really 2nd hand, wel not in the sense of the word. Its new, unused, so if anything you could call it new/old stock.

Hans Dampf V2 is fine for the rear but I'd go Magic Mary on the front.

Why are you planning on selling the bike? You're unlikely to make money off it in the current climate

If you’re intending to build this bike up using discounted parts and then selling at a profit I can’t see that working in the current environment. Wrong wheel size for starters and with no warranty on the frame or parts…..

Hans Dampf just isn't very good tbf. OK in the dry when new, not very good in the wet, and just amazingly cloggy in mud (and some of the mega mud is very cloggy indeed). But the main thing is they're really reliant on the tread shape, which in theory is good engineering but in practice with soft rubber, they lose the block edges really quickly and they lose a ton of grip as soon as that happens. By race day they'll be tired. Adequate on the rear but even then I wouldn't. Can be cheap, sure, but how much are you spending on this holiday, to save £20 on a tyre? (or to end up buying whatever they have in adh, for a thousand euro)

Magic Mary is just incredibly better, it's a great tyre and doubly so when you're having to plan ahead and have no idea what the weather will be like. Mary isn't even that much slower than Hans Dampf, the only time it's ever worse is on hardpack and even then it's close. I haven't used the Tacky Chan or newer Big Betty but even so, Mary is in the right place in the range if you're only taking 1 front tyre.

On carcasses it needs to be supergravity or superdownhill, don't be tempted. Foams are a good idea too. There's some puncturey bits and some warp speed bits but also you'll end up doing some stupid overtakes, or opportunistic unplanned lines that turn out to be terrible ideas.

(me, I took a pair of downhill minions. We got a dry race and it was a bit too much tyre tbh, if I do it again I'll definitely take a faster rear option but it'll still be something tough as old boots so I can clumsily smash into a load of rocks)

PS buy an extra tyre, pack it carefully and return it after if you don't need it. You can do the same with other spares that you don't have. Just, don't forget to return it, I found my mega spare mech in my spares box about 3 years later and went "ah shit")

PPS put more effort into the quali than the main race. It's more important but it's also better!

Well even if it is 2nd hand, its still a better deal than one thats been used or abused, covered in scratches and heaven know what else.

Anyway, was about tyres....

They're fine... but why does it matter as the person buying it is likely to swap whatever you have fitted either way.

That would put me off,  never been a fan of Hans dampf, I'd rather have a Magic Mary Nobby Nic combo or DHR2 fr & rr,  as for selling an as new old stock custom build with some Hope bling I can't see it selling with a decent profit, a lot of time wasters and insulting offers will come your way.  There's lots of people got 2.6 on the rear of their Mega as well as up front, there's decent clearance.

I use them front and rear...only in the really manky mud have I thought the tyre wasn't great on the front...not had any issues with the rear at all. Sying that, I have often thought a Magic Mary would be more sensible up front - seems to be the same tread design but a slightly wider tyre.

Reminds me of the people on those buy a cheap house to turn a profit on those programmes aired for the better-to-do-than-watch-daytime-tv.

"We want a stained glass window in the entrance because I love old churches".... Yeah, but you're selling it vs the next owner is going to rip it out because it's shit.

Basically what @weeksy said.

Hans dampf is possible the worst tyre I've used from any brand

Yes it's about tyres but seen as you typed the long winded story your opening up to reply about the whole subject you posted

Hans dampf don't bother

Even a new unused np mega 275 with factory 36,s with hope wheels brakes blah blah is going to struggle to return you much more than 1500 notes

So I really wou,don't bother

Keep it

Or sell it frame only just about get your money back if your lucky

Pinkbike has almost died a death at trying to shift a bike

Ebay not much better

Retailers can barely get rid of them at half the rrp so sadly you've no chance

Are you talking about the V2 or the V1? They changed it a lot as the V1 was a bit rubbish

Hans Dampf is a trail bike tyre, it's meant to be an all-rounder. I like it on the front for XC trail riding with a Racing Ralph on the back. For gnarlier stuff, a Magic Mary up front with a Hans Dampf on the back would be the way to go.

Sigh....

Then thats going to be the exact same for every bike currently for sale new in every shop on the planet isnt it ?.

Dont like the bars, dont like the tyres, the shock or this or that.

.

Anyway. Some like Hans Dampf, others hate them. I think I'll go with one for the rear and the MM on the front, as its quite the all round tyre and i'm getting them at a good price.

Thanks to the informative posters  😀

Intending on buying something else, maybe Ebike commuting type thing. It was originally a spare in case my Ebike goes down, and I had many parts sitting in the parts box new and unused, so it uses them up, with only a few things to get, and as I've cobbled together some 30 bikes in the last 30 years or so its something i enjoy doing. Most often I keep things for a while, then either sell it whole, or disassemble and sell the parts, or recycle them onto something else.

I can see the current climate isnt good for selling. But no company can break even forever, and I think the prices will go back up again sooner rather than later. Its always been like that in the bike industry.

Issue is the basis for doing this is a bike that has sold very well, and which has been discounted to a very, very low level for a long time (and continues to do so). Theres 97 on eBay at the moment at various prices. Wish you the best with it but I'd suggest you're going to be better to split it so not sure id suggest building it up. Either that or sell at a loss. Think a new model is due soon too which will further knock prices.

I couldn't find my minion dhf last year on a summer trip to alp d'huez for my Sommet 27.5 so left my HD 2.35 (think it was a pacestar too) on the front...rode it all week including the route of the megavalanche and I'm still here! To be fair though, if i was doing the race with snow etc, i defo want the minion or MM

Strange thing tyre choice as HD is my default choice for front tyre trail riding around the surrey hills...i just get on with it.

DHF is still a great tyre in drier conditions but when it starts getting wetter and looser them the MM is far better. MM can stay on all year imo but I switch my DHF out during winter.

Yeah go for it, Schwalbe are tougher than Maxxis too. No they're not, yes they are, no they're not... I split a Schwalbe in 2 seconds, a Maxxis exploded in my face like an IUD* ... etc etc. Just make your own bleeding choices will ya! 😀

*does he mean IED? No
