Going to attempt my first wheel build this evening. Got everything apart from any spoke oil.
Ideally id like to use motor oil as per the RM wheel building book or linseed oil but i don't have any to hand.
Will any oil be ok or am i best to stick with those 2?
Thanks
I just use 3 in 1 and haven't had any problems.
Old fork oil here, owt thatll lube
owt that will lube but the good thing about linseed oil is it acts like a weak thread lock in that it lubes for the build and blocks the thread stoppping water ingress , corrosion & stops em moving of their own accord. - allowing you to tune your wheels in the future.
Colour me weird but I use a blob of grease.
wierdo.
grease+1
Just dunk the spokes in it. Never had a problem.
Jon @ JRA suggested Finish Line - put the nipples in a little pot, squirt lube on them and stick the pot on a radiator for 1/2 an hour or so it thins a bit and soaks into the threads nicely.
Careful using oil with carbon rims though. You don't really want oil round the outside of the nipple as it can cause issues with the carbon. Just a wee dab on the threads of the spoke should be enough.
Finishline Wet used here, just a dab down the threads as I'm going.
as above I have used whatever was to hand at the time of the build
