Has anyone had any real world experience with the Öhlins STX22 rear shock? Not a whole lot of reviews out there I can find.

Thanks!

Awesome. Thank you both. Thinking about it to upgrade my Jeffsy’s Monarch. CCDB reliability just doesn’t seem to be worth the risk!

I've ridden one quite a bit on an Enduro 29.

It's a very good shock, build-quality seems to be a level above RS & Fox and the adjusters are very pleasant to use.

Performance wise, it's comparable to the grip offered by a twin-tube damper like a CC DBair/inline or Fox X2, but with a slightly less plush / more efficient feel.

What kind of riding do you do? My feeling is it's better suited for "enduro" than "trail" riding. Planted rather than perky, IYKWIM.

PS - I'm selling mine on ebay, in case any Enduro 29 owners are interested.

Thanks Chaka! Really appreciate that. I do a bit of everything in truth. Couple of enduros a year, swaledale and the lakes are my locals so can be big days round the dale or pass storming in the lakes.

We are running four of them between us all on Enduros. Mine was a replacement for a Cane Creek inline which failed after a couple of rides. Easy to set up and very plush.

I may be interested in the shock, depending on the price, what condition is it in and does it have the Specialized fittings.

Pmd you

NP, sounds like it'd be spot-on for your riding.

I used to have a CCDB inline (two actually, both broke), and probably preferred that - but as you say the reliability is suspect and they only offer a one-year warranty, which hardly inspires confidence.

I’ve had mine on my bike for about 8-9 months with a fair few rides now. Can’t fault it. Traction is immense compared to old air shock, love how it handles roots and rock, the float x used to just give up on repeated fast hits, this never changes. Tend to run it in the middle hsc setting most of the time. There is a lot less pedal bob, if any than I thought there would be.  A 500lb spring matched up with my bike and my weight and gave 30% sag but I put a 550 on as I prefer it a bit stiffer, currently at 25%. The original ohlins spring was also a tad heavy, so I went cane creek vault, which is much lighter and not yellow.  I’ve put the air shock back on out of curiosity on a couple of more xc type rides and hated it.

I picked up a 2nd hand one for my Enduro 2017 after getting annoyed with the stock Monarch, had it serviced and a volume reducer put in and its miles better than the Monarch or a Fox shock I had on a stumpy before that.

The Monarch I could never get to feel right, it was either super soft and good for grip and chatter but awful for pedalling and lost any poppy - playful nature or it was the reverse good at pedalling, playful but awful on any sort of chatter. The STX has beenf fine for me since day 1, dialled in the recommened SAG, fiddled with some LSC and Rebound and its been ace, It really has been set and forget. I've also not suffered with airloss like some people complain of on the MTBR forums.

I am tempted to try the TTX22 and do watch eBay and classifieds.

@chakaping am I right in saying you picked up a X2 for your Enduro from Mojo during the firesale? any review on it?

I found it an odd shock to tune but a great shock to ride.

I had it on my Starling for a few months and rode it a lot in that time. The traction was amazing as was the grip. It always felt a little overdamped in the compression though and turning the adjusters seemed to do very little compared to a Fox shock. It was a test shock borrowed from elsewhere and they had the same experience apparently. I stuck the shockwiz on it which seemed happy with the results. I did speak to an Öhlins tech who thought as I had the rebound at the slowest possible and the compression barely on at all that it probably needed a change in the shim stack for that bike.

Positives

-climbed great, like really oddly well

-felt like it kept the bike well balanced

-had enough progression and still felt ‘poppy’

-would buy and ride it

-construction is beautiful

Negatives

-car park test felt odd (not that it matters)

-struggled with high speed repeated hits like on BPW 50 shades. But then it’s a small lightweight shock, unlike an X2 or CCDBA.

I got an X2 from the Mojo sale for my Mega 290, not tried it on the Enduro. It's just gone back for warranty actually but was nice while it worked properly.

Although someone "bought" my shock last night, the bell end has now changed his mind - so anyone interested please drop me a line.

@chakaping ah, I thought it was for your enduro!

@Tracey what wheels are you running on your fleet of Enduros? I'm currently running the stock Rovals (Roval Branded hubs and rims) and would like to replace the back wheel for something stronger but not too much heavier.

I have been looking at either Hope Pro 4's onto Ex511 (not sure on 28 or 32 hole - current rear is 28)  or the DT Swiss EX1501 one30 rear wheel only.

Sixth Element on Abigale and Katie's. Mine have LBs. All on Hope hubs and 32 spokes. The Rovals are hung on the garage wall just in case we need a spare. Kevin is still running carbon Rovals in his which busted a couple of spokes in the front crashing in the Alps last year. It's been rebuilt at 18 Bikes with stronger spokes. He put in a WTB for the rest of the trip which was new but could now do with a new rim. He has had some DT Swiss 511 on 350 hubs built up for this year's trip just in case.
