Sorry to foist another Nukeproof Mega thread on you
( No I`m Not sorry )

First up Thanks to rlawrie23 for starting the build thread and apologies for sort of hijacking it .
till I saw that thread I had never heard of the frame but after a week in the lakes riding the MmmBop around with a group all on sussers I was beat up and they were pretty fresh at the end of the day I was considering going back to FS
Well the rest is history on the other Thread so here are my first impressions after a ride today on the not quite finished bike .

[IMG] [/IMG]

I am still waiting for a front shifter but what the heck get the chain on and give it a whirl

The first part of the ride is up a tarmac climb which I have rode lot on the HT with the front locked and the rear turned to full compression damping it rode up with no feel-able bob to me even when out of the saddle tried it on the softest and it still rode up well very well much to my surprise as the marin from 4 years ago certainly bobbed this was very welcome .
The first 4 miles were on tarmac so I tried all sorts of peddling styles and it coped well imho .

then it was on to a track the roman road to skipton starts off fairly smooth gravelly and picks up in roughness as you get nearer to skipton
WOW its a comfy chair ride to be able to sit and peddle over just about anything was brill I had forgotten what comfort was all about I kept looking for the roughest bits instead of the smoothest line as on the HT

then the trail goes down what seems to be a fallen dry stone wall all over the trail so took the roughest way down there too Loved it and so much easier than the Mbop .

The best bit today for me was the rooty last bit of the decent locals will know what I am on about usually walk some of it on the bop but cleaned the bloody lot today 😆 with ease though not speed as I was so surprised to be still on the bike grinning like a jackass .

the return leg was on the canal towpath another delightful part of the ride no hovering over the seat trying to pedal just sit and go Fantastic got home feeling on cloud 9 .

So what do I think of the Mega
Well I am no riding god and probably will never find its limits but I love it , Could be new bike syndrome but it has left me wondering why I went back to a HT 3-4 years ago Never again but I still have a HT to have the odd go on if the urge ever strikes .

Thanks again to the Nukeproof thread starters for sparking off the impulse purchase of one of these frames .

Thanks for the write-up. Mine is currently in the build stage which i'm hoping to have done this week....just waiting on a nukeproof headset & some hope hub adaptors.

I'm still slightly concerned I have gone a size too small (medium and i'm 6ft) although i do prefer a smaller bike and when offered up next to a small transition covert i've been testing (which felt comfortable) it's slightly bigger so may just be right, fingers crossed!

Tis looking + sounding good. I shall be jumping on the Nukeproof bandwagon tomorrow although in DH kind of way. Hopefully my Scalp frame should finally arrive tomorrow.

Good write up Chris, glad to hear you like it!! I was quite surprised with the lack of bob of your earlier video. I suppose modern shock technology has vastly improved the pedalling efficiency of most suspension designs.

Did you have any BB clearance issues running 150mm forks?

Hi Pete Could be just newness but I think not I have done my sentence on the HT which I did enjoy muchly but these old bones now crave a bit of comfort .

Yes it is a little lower than the Mbop was but had no issues today I guess I will start finding the bad points when the novelty wears off .

Me too on the lack of bob even off the seat pedalling was good .
cant get over the back end not pinging all over the place on the rooty bit thats what made me grin the most today .

Got any more (closer/non-arty 😉 ) shots of it built up?

Impressed with the speed of your build Trout, especially as some ppl must have had the frame on order for months (delivery dates got pushed back), yet unlike Psychle's Mojo, they didn't have all the bit ready to slap on it asap, when it arrived - that would drive me mad.

How heavy is the frame?

looks like 3.6kg which is just under 8lb. Scales are crap though. My 575 came up at 2.9kg which is just under 6.6lb.

I think the frame weight is on one of the other threads.

BTW how is it different to a Heckler?

I think it's designed around a 160 fork and the angles are quite different. Both single pivot but the mega has a linkage thing but I'm really not sure what difference this makes!

Very SC Butcher-esk, rather than Heckler shirely?

the linkage wil make **** all difference, it's gonna be about geometry and pivot height...aren't H's based on 150mm forks?

I think there might be little more to the suspension action due to linkage than "**** all difference", but yes angles/length/pivot height will be more overall important.

Heckler - 140 to 160 (assumed max)
Butcher - 150/160 (definite max)

Oh and SC happily charge £450 more for the linkage driven single pivot... whether its worth that, is a different question

ahhhhhhhhhh

Cheers Troutie, I quite fancied one, but worried it was quite heavy & probably overkill for 140mm forks, but that look great.

Two questions:

Will it be better than my old HL 5 Spot?

Will it be as good as a Transition Covert, if not is the Covert £600 better?

That's 3 questions but what the hey!

8lbs seems pretty heavy, Cover it 6.7lb (without shock) so would come in lighter with a Fox RP23

Nukeproof claim 6.8lbs without shock so shouldn't be much different to the Covert weightwise

Forget the bike, I want the puppy! 😀 Actually am also very seduced by the Mega but think it will be too long for my short arse. Will wait for the longer term verdicts methinks...

You need to get it up on Harden Moor for a play, lots of easy drop offs, techy descents, techy climbs and general playing around.

smudge, if you're travelling, you should get one of us locals to show you around. As is always the case, the best stuff, best lines and best obsticals to session are not that obvious.

It's just a fantastic techy xc riding playground. Mostly just testing your bottle to try stuff, rather than requiring any skills. It's not just Harden Moor, also St Ives Estate.
