Hang on; you've bought a fixed gear track bike, for riding on a track? IE, for it's intended purpose?
(Gets all confused, feels unwell, goes for a little lie down...)
I know. Keeeeeraaaazzzy, isn't it?
You're just like, MAAAD, you!
Is it suitable for Manchester? Looks like long cranks.
Angle of the photo. It's been ridden at Manchester for the last 5 years by a mate (who I bought it from).
Edit: measured the BB drop (11" - Manc spec) and cranks are 165mm (Man spec also).
Photo doesn't do the colour justice. It's a nice metallic blue. And made of 531.
Whats this about suitability?
Smaller tracks = shorter cranks due to lower speed and steep banking?
When I used to ride at Manchester 10-15 years ago there was a limitation on BB height and crank length to stop riders from clipping the track.
Exactly that, spooky.
A "Manchester" spec bike has an 11" BB drop and 165mm cranks, which is necessary for any of the UK's three indoor tracks (and presuambly anything 250 metres and shorter - no idea about the long (400m) German/Russian indoor tracks).
Banking is much steeper indoors than outdoors (e.g. Herne Hill)
Edit: not sure about the "lower speed" bit. They had the Derny running at 40mph the other night....
rules are there for a reason.
you are not allowed michelin tubs at manchester as they don't grip enough.
there is a gear inch upper limit at calshot because it's so steep that if you gear is too high you can't get up to speed quick enough to stop you sliding down the banking.
the head angle looks about 85 degrees!
Mr Smith - quite right. These are old Contis. I suspect that I will end up having a new set of (stiffer) wheels built at some pount (I'm a good 2 stone heavier than the previous owner - I have the short and stocky build of a sprinter).
I've heard that said about Calshot - having seen phots, I can see why. I went to the Ghent Six, so know how steep 160m tracks can be!
pjt - yep. Nice and steep - classic tack geometry!
150 quid.... lucky man!
150 quid.... lucky man!
Indeed. I am a luckymaninthenorth..!
Needs the cones to be tightened on the rear hub and some new bar tape, but otherwise no changes needed for me to ride (unless I have to swap the saddle).
If I wasn't so tired this morning, I'd have been down that the track for the SQT.
