You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi All,
Trying to open the office again. One of the things we want to do is to incentivise people to cycle in rather than use public transport and/or drive.
Thus i'm looking for some no too hideous bike racks that are suitable for an (ok-ish looking) office! Not like ones you'd find outside the station ;-).
Sadly due to space restrictions they'll form a prominent feature 🙂 but can't really expect people to leave them outside.
will need to house about five bikes to start with as workdays will be staggered.
Seen lots of adverts for those little clip ones, Clug etc, which would be ideal! but i assume they have to match the height/wheel size of the intended bike which probably wont work.
Having the bikes hanging vertically would be best for space.
Anyone got any ideas?
thank you!
The Clugs are ok but as you say are size dependent and they are static. In my shed I have a couple of Velo Hinges which are good and a Topeak Swing-Up. Both of those work well as you can swing the bikes out of the way to save space and they can cope with most tyre sizes apart from the fat bikes which I doubt people will be commuting on.
Thanks! either the topeak or the steady rack would work.
I found these: https://www.thebikestoragecompany.co.uk/product/vertical-bike-rack/ but i think the swivelling/folding of the steady rack would be way better.
Good luck finding a Topeak Swing-up. I've been trying to find some for my garage for a few weeks. Not in stock anywhere.
These lifeline ones are much cheaper than any of the options above. Don't do the swinging thing though. https://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-wallmount-bike-storage-hanger/
I commute in by bike everyday; do you really want several muddy, road-grity, wet bikes hung up in a communal area of the office?

The same thing is available at planet x for half the price of wiggle, but not in stock at the moment.

No doubt, and maybe even cheaper on eBay or Amazon but they were the first illustrative hit on my Google search.

Not really no!
We asked the staff what would make them feel more comfortable about coming back to the office should they wish and the main response was an alternative to public transport or the shocking parking prices.
However we are in the centre of Brighton and it seems that if you leave a bike (not even a good one) outside it’s gone.
Sadly our landlord is not interested in anything communal.
Even more sadly post Covid, we now have a bit of space in one corner of the office.
Bike racks have been the limit of my thinking on the issue so far.
I've got those generic lifeline/planet-X hooks in the garage.
Fine for most bikes, they don't fit big (<2.4") tyres if anyone is a fashion conscious/victim mountain biker. And there's a knack to flicking the hook away from the wall with your front wheel.
I would say they don't save a massive amount of space though unless you really squeeze the bikes in (i.e. fine at home where you'll be careful or not GAS about scratching your own bikes, less fine in an office where Person A can't fathom why Person B is upset about A's BSO's un-plugged bar end putting a scratch on B's £5k Pinarello). At best the spacing is going to need to be one every ~700mm (i.e. normal handle bars).
And they make life really difficult if the user is shorter/weaker or the bikes heavier (e-bikes).
Depending on numbers you might be better just putting as many of these as will fit in the space and seeing what take up is like. You can then space them closer together as the bikes aren't having to be manhandled, and they angle away from the wall so you can probably fit them much closer together too. The downside, even at ~45deg they stick out a bit further than a vertical bike.

Worth also getting a small
Set of tools and a track
Pump.
We've converted the main entrance/ gasket of my Covent Garden office into a bike store with wall mounted vertical hanging racks. I think that we've decided that the benefits to our staff outweigh the additional requirements for cleaning.

Yup fully agree.
Managed to buy the only available (at short notice) ones and bunged about 10 on the walls as a trial. Seems since doing it we've seen a 200% increase in people cycling in which can only be a good thing i think.
if it continues past august, we'll look at invesing in a shower/changing room.
Asthetically its growing on me, quite like it now.
thanks again
