Hello! First thread, only fitting it's a hardy perennial of a question.
Since mini-Trippnehof has been rugged enough to sit on the back, most of my riding has been on a Kona Ute. It's a wonderful thing that makes me smile, more so since swapping the swoopy standard handlebars for a more standard MTB raiser bar. I've been adding in some gentle trails to our loops on which it's lovely and stable. The little one likes looing at trees and the half-way picnic.
Now I know that it'll never be a scalpel, but I'd like to make it a little more capable off-road. I reckon MTB tyres with a bit more volume will give me some useful grip and allow lower pressures to give a bit more cushioning. No real desire to go down a turd-polishing rabbit hole.
Before I begin guessing some tyres, has anyone done similar to inspire me? How big a tyre can I fit on a 19mm wide 29er rim before it starts to cause trouble (frame + fork clearance is measured in kilometres, to it'll be flopping off the rim that is the limit).
Thanks
On my singlespeed MTB I run 2.25's on 19mm rims. Old style Mavic 319's so I think that's the external width too. Tend to inflate them to 30psi, but not too often so I reckon I'm usually running mid 20's and they don't roll off the rims.
I've ran 2.25 saguaro's on mavic open pro rims without problem. think they were 17mm.
