So, I've just booked our family holiday to barneville Carteret in Normandy in late June for 2 weeks. I will probably hire a bike for a day or two whilst out there to save lumping one along on the back of the car & I was just wondering what are the access laws like in France. Can you legally cycle anywhere you want like in Scotland or do they have equivalent bridleways that permits cycling?
Also, if anyone can recommend routes that take in some forest or coastal bits around there, that'd be nice. Trail centre?
Thanks.

Sorry, nothing specific but www.vttfrance.com is usually good for finding routes.

Just noticed they now have an anglais version.

I think it is, unless explicit "no cycling" signs.

Don't have any specific info but everywhere we have been in France has some signed waymarked offroad routes (includes near Avignon, central Loire, Burgundy and Alsace) - just keep an eye out for information boards and the wee VTT markers.

Can be any colour and are either painted on things or on small 6 inch square signs.

The local tourist office in the main town in the area generally have maps and route info, either free or a few Euros. An IGN map has come in handy a few times as well.

We found some very nice riding around the Suisse Normande - lots of secret green lanes, woodsy singletrack etc. The local VTT clubs mark out colour-coded routes which are always worthwhile and you can pick up a guide book in the tourist office for a few Euros. But go where you like, unless there's some obvious reason not to.
