Bikepacking plans for the weekend shelved due to 50 mph winds. But hoping to get out on Sunday in the western side of the North York Moors. Have pieced some stuff together on the map but you never know what it’s really like at this time of the year. Anyone got any recommendations of ~25-40 mile relatively weatherproof gravel routes in that area?
Hutton-le-Hole, Gillamoor, Rudland Rigg, Bloworth Crossing, old railway to the Lion Inn, more old railway to Bank Top, Ana Cross and the descent to Lastingham that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face
Thanks Stretch. We do know some of that I think and your right it is a good area. Will plot it up. Cheers.
Yep that'll be a lovely route (though you'll feel the wind!).
Last time I went down Hutton Common to Gillamoor there were closures, but that was years ago so I'm sure you'll be grand.
Anyone have any routes that take in the Cleveland Way gravel that runs north of Sutton Bank? I saw it on some Dales 300 photos and it looked lovely.
Don't know that area I'm afraid, but would be interested if anyone has any suggestions.
If you do the Rosedale one above you could add on a loop on the railway into Rosedale, then either up Chimney Bank (wouldn't fancy it, but it's one of 'those' climbs) and down from Ana Cross, or head to Hollins Farm and take the singletrack to Lastingham. If you're super keen you could then double back up one of the shooting tracks and down from Ana Cross.
The old drove road that goes along the top of Black Hambleton from High Paradise farm (coffee etc.) to Square corner is fairly weather resistant (although exposed). You can follow the green or blue Sutton bank routes to get to High Paradise. The green is all weather. Not done all the blue as my kids weren't up for it although my brothers kids have done it.
From Square corner you can turn right (marked as NCN 656 on 1:50000 map I'm viewing on Bing). The lane back through Hawnby is usually vey quite although very very steep hills but more out of the wind.
Or from Square Corner turn sharp left (Marked as NCN 65 on map) and descend on steep gravel (I did it on my old audax bike and it was a bit scary but gravel bike would be easy as it was just very loose a few years ago but likely bedded in more now) to Kepwick. From there you can take the road back onto the top (long slog but dead end tarmac road) or follow the lanes South and back to Sutton Bank. Going as far as Kilburn on the lane and then NCN 656 Noth again to Sutton bank would also make a loop. Would be a decent gravel and lanes ride.
Or from Square corner you can take the cycle route to Cod Beck and Osmotherly but coming back in a loop across the moors gets more complicated. The lanes West of the A19 provide good quiet cycling though.
Also there are the Moor 2 Sea routes on the national park website that are mainly all weather (although I haven't done all of them and bits do get muddy).

Hope this helps with ideas 🙂
How about;
Park at the Moors Centre at the top of Sutton Bank. Ride out the car park on road heading north, past gallops & along Cleveland Road. Continue north, Hambleton Road, Hambleton Way, Cleveland Way, past Square Corner, on to High Lane track all the way to the road north of Cod Beck Reservoir. At the cattle grid turn right into wood & descend back to the road. Shortly up the road turn right & head east until the road runs out & head up onto the Moor.
Take gravel roads past Bilsdale Transmittor & into Hawnby. West out of Hawnby past Arden Hall to Hambleton Road, turn left & head south to Paradise Farm. Past the Farm & follow the Cleveland way along the edge of the ridge line back to the start, picking up the bike trails back to the car park.
Drop me an email if you want more route info
There is a facebook group as well which has few routes / ideas on it
Thank you all. We did Stretches route initially under blue winter skies. It was beautiful, then the weather came in….. stayed dry though.
Nice route 👍🏻
Think I’ve got a gpx of that route somewhere, will have a look tonight.
Thanks
thanks @stretch
I was looking around there trying to plot a route from Gt Ayton. That's really helpful
