have recently swapped my anthem x2 for a lovely new charge duster mid bike (have no regrets whatsoever/loving going back to a steel ht 😀 the thing is that when i went out on it's second ride,i was going down a small descent (with roots) my feet just came off the pedals (cue repeatedly bashing my conkers on the saddle/taking full weight on my pelvic region.not too pleasant (also getting a v8 pedal in the shin 😯 it's been a while since i rode a ht,also do not want to go clipless (as i feel most comfortable riding flats, despite the saddle/conker interface 😯 any tips on how to keep feet on flats whilst taking roots e.t.c thanks in advance p.s i wear gore tex hiking boots mostly (for when it's muddy/wet e.t.c)

ride heels down and have ball of foot ahead of pedal spindle (if youve ever ridden SPDs you probably had ball of foot directly over spindle).

You might need to drop your saddle slightly to allow you to keep a bit more of a bend in your knees and your heels down.

Grippier shoes will help; Shimano AM41 or Five Tens are the premier league, but a 20 quid pair of vans/etnies/skate shoe of choice from TK Maxx will give you ample grip for a fraction of the price. I had 5.10s and hated them as the sole was so stiff there was no feel but i accept I'm in a minority, and Ive done all day XC rides in Vans with no foot fatigue which some criticise soft soles for.

Nothing numpty about it, I moved to flatties after 18yrs of spds and it took me a long time to build my confidence on them. V8 pedals arent the grippiest either, these are the cheapest version of a pedal available in various guises (Nukeproof, HT Industries and Superstar nano to name 3 others) which will offer more grip and support than V8s; I'd try "better" shoes before changing pedals though.
