Skip this if you get annoyed at bonehead questions.

My rear brake (Shimano XT BR-M775, XT levers) seems to retract too far, if that makes sense? It seems to have a lot of travel without locking up, I've bled the system and am reasonably confident its air free. I think my issue is that the pads seem to retract all the way to the full extent the calliper will allow. As a result when I reapply the brake there is a lot of movement before the brake applies. I've tried adjustments on the lever as well, doesn't seem to make a difference.

Am I missing something or is my technique flawed? For bleeding I used a bleed kit to bleed the system from the nipple up, using correct Shimano fluid.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Jon.

Very doubtful, it was standard fit on my Giant from 2009.

its the old sticky pistons.  You might get away with resetting them by ziptieing the lever to the bar overnight but most probably take the wheel out and pump the lever and work the pistons in and out BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO LET THE PISTONS MOVE TOO FAR.   Lubing the pistons can help - use the same fluid as yo have in the brakes.  Similar question asked earlier today and someone posted a link to a good video

Thanks, I did see the other thread, its what prompted me to ask this, but I sort of thought I had the opposite problem. I'll give that a go, thank you.

Just thinking out loud, as I've recently got some sram level brakes, (my first hydraulic brakes lol!) if doing the above, would putting a shim between the pads, to stop them moving too much be a good idea, to emulate a disk being there if the wheels removed?

you want them to move more than when braking but not enough to push right out.  I put a cone spanner in the slot in the calliper when pulling the lever with the pads out.  with the pads in assuming they are not worn out the pistons should not come right out so long as both move equally.
