Ive seen reference this evening to a new Notubes rim recommending 21mm Stans tape is used when fitting a tyre.
This is news to me, I thought the Notubes rims (or any tubeless rim without eyelet holes) was designed to be used with simply a tyre and some sealing fluid.
Is this not the case? is rim tape still required?
Im fairly new to tubeless and a few days ago set up a 2.4" Racing Ralph on an xm819 rim with some Stans sealant, and although I havent had a chance to ride it on the trail yet, its still inflated. Am I setting myself up for problems when I hit the trail?
I cant see any use for tubeless rim tape other than to seal the eyelets on a standard rim, but maybe they are supposed to interface with the tyre bead? I dunno.. anyone know?
The spoke holes are drilled right through on Stan's rims. You need the tape or the rim strips to seal the holes! Depending on the rims you might be better off with the 25mm tape.
The 819 is a true tubeless rim (UST), so hasn't any holes on the inside of it. Stan's are a lot lighter though.
that explains it. thanks!
I presumed that all 'notubes' rim would as a matter of course be fully sealed/UST
