MVdP...god I love him!
it also poses the question (again) is Roglic's daredevilry > his bike handling ability ?
What happened with Roglic?
we didn't see but he was flashing a lot of buttock.
He is usually a pretty good bike handler I thought. Not caught up with Paris Nice today. Too busy marvelling over MVdP
Can we change the title to something more useful like 2021 stage racing please?
Not anyway I know of!
Though Pog nearly caught him!
Not anyway I know of!
You did it anyway. Magic!
Back to the races: Really cool to see Roglič congratulating Schachmann on the line today.

I suspect he'll be remembered better for the races he's lost than the ones he's won (which is a crazy amount of races). I find him quite hard to warm to as a personality most of the time, but he's an incredible sportsperson.
I also can't stop thinking about MvdP crossing the line today. I felt traumatised just watching it.
Mark Wahlberg Primoz Roglic apparently went down twice - one major fall before the coverage started, then another one while chasing back on. I really admire him for chasing all the way to the line and not sitting up once it became obvious that he wasn't goning to get back on. That's proper respect for the race that is
I've really been enjoying watching the highlights of Paris - Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico have found the commentary a little thin though with the post race chat almost pointless on eurosport/GCN!
MvdP was awesome. Hopefully he didn't go so deep that he is knackered for MSR.
some ragged looking tt riding at tireno 😀 a bit ring rusty.
Froome looks like he's struggling at the back of the peleton again @ Volta Catalunya..... Moviestar taking their revenge?
Strong field in the race this year, very much looking forward to it!
Froome is done, ISN are paying silly money for someone who's way past his best, Ineos wouldn't have let him go if there was a chance he could still win races.
There is a danger that INEOS will end up 1,2 and 3 at the Volta a Catalunya.
Froome spat out the back on a 4 percenter :/
Almeida just went pop, can he hold on to third? So pleased to see Chaves back where he belongs though
smiler is back!
smiler is back!
Always good to see.

I'm giving Froomme the benefit of the doubt at the moment, coming back from breaking his neck, femur, elbow, hip and ribs and then the 2020 race season mainly being cancelled due to covid wouldnt have helped anyone! TDF is were you can write him off if he isnt performing.
coppi-e-bartali
I cant seem to find this on eurosport, how are people watching this race?

Pretty sure it's not available in the UK

I'm not sure how, he's what now, over a year into recovery ? Surely if you're going to get it back, you'll have got there by now. It's not like he's getting dropped on the exceptionally tough days, he's getting dropped on the relatively tame bits of a normal day. Sure he could be just 'riding to power' but what's the point even turning up if you're not trying? May as well stay in a training camp and ride to power day in day out, there's got to come a time and a day where you push on a bit, otherwise just give the space to a youngster who's learning their trade instead on the team that week.
This isn't me insulting him or saying anything negative as such, but i'm not seeing anything that resembles a comeback at this stage.

Don't pro athletes build up to events but before the event taper down for freshness?
why isn't Froome riding Basque ? you'd think he need as much competition as possible. it's kicking off big time 😀
bloody fabulous roads they are riding in the tour of valencia, so jealous!

tour of the alps looked a bit nuts racing up narrow streets between parked cars!
Simon dancing up an Alp and flying down
This year must be the most of the pre grand tours I have watched, I am not sure if its a GCN thing but I find the start of each race or first of each tour poor as they never discuss the riders, who are the favourites or previous form, has it always been like this and the type of discussion is saved for the grand tours with their greater production budgets?
holy moly Ganna going up 7% in an aero-tuck.... and still didn't win ! ?)
carnage and schoolboy errors @ Romandie
keep off the white lines Stefan

Froome isn't going to be riding Tdf at this rate.... rolling in 12 minutes after Alex Dowsett is pretty poor (19 mins off the winning time).
looks pretty grim out there today 😀
Denis does Porte
WTF! Lost hold of the bars?
what a race! what a climb! looked like he changed gear just before starting the sprint so didn't have enough grip on the hoods :/

G really prone to falls, it's amazing he managed to win a grand tour. Hopefully he'll have a good TT tomorrow and wins the race. 🤞
from that pic ^ he looks fortunate not to break his wrist.
G really prone to falls
When was the last time before today?

Giro last year - water bottle under the wheel in the neutral roll-out.
I don't know if he crashes more than other riders, but he does seem to get involved in notable ones. Anyone remember the time Warren Barguil smacked him into a telegraph pole?
Not sure when his last crash was but I do remember him having plenty of crashes in races.
Seems I'm not alone in my views

couple of them have been bad luck, the infamous bottle and the police motorcycle. He's pretty tough though riding with a broken hip.
Well it's one way to avoid wearing the organiser's skin suit for today's TT.
How many miles/km per year do the pro's ride then?
Off the top of my head that’s 3 tours, 2 giros, Flanders, MSR, olympics, suisse couple of smaller races he’s crashed out of. The surprise is anyone is still suprised but yesterday’s was special even for him.
How many miles/km per year do the pro’s ride then?
Depends, but most will do time (Alex Dowsett's channel has shown some training rides where he generally rides to time with a target for a number of efforts within it) at say 20-25 hours per week, rather than a fixed distance.
That works out at probably 2500km / month maybe so i.r.o 25-30,000 per year allowing for off season / a grand tour where they can do 3-3500km in 3 weeks
he managed his first win since 2018 tdf (cementing his position as the Odious team leader for this years showdown)

STRAVA shows Alex has done just over 9000 km, 303 hours, 113000 m climbing so far this year.
In other news I noticed Geraint shaking out that right hand part way through today's TT.
so that's 2250km/mo, and an average of 75 hours/mo of which part is off season - but where did an Essex lad find 113000m of climbing 😉
Andorra. Where he lives.
Delighted for G's win today.
This season is really shaping up to be something special.
Who's going to win the Giro?
Who’s going to win the Giro?
Thomas has a good chance if he can stay upright - which given the weather in northern Italy at this time of year, isn't a given. It's a decent field of up and coming riders, nearly men or those in the autumn of their career and only a few GT winners able to win again. Not sure where Bernal sits but fitness is a massive unknown. Simon Yates has the team, experience and a good bit of form.
It'll be fascinating to see how Evenepoel goes as he hasn't raced this year at all. Carthy looked a bit short at the Tour of the Alps but building form nicely. Mikel Landa will of course, flatter to deceive. Molema will lose time early on and look better as the race goes on and finish top 10 -just.
The Giro does tend to throw up a surprise so I'm going to stick my neck out and say Mani Buchmann.
Thomas has a good chance if he can stay upright
I'm going to stick my neck out and say that Geraint THomas has approx 0% chance of winning the Giro this year:
https://www.cyclingnews.com/features/analysing-ineos-grenadiers-giro-ditalia-long-list/ 🙂
There's a thread specifically about the Giro here:
https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/giro-2021/
Doh. Suppose he has to get on 2 wheels first.
Thanks @theotherjonv and @slowoldman for answering my q, the numbers are mind-boggling!
crazy motocycle @ the Algarve !
Froome seems really positive 🙂 i like that... As with my thoughts this year for Cav, i'd just like to see Froome battling again, just once or twice for now to give him that push back in it... but i don't think he needs more positivity 🙂 he's got loads 🙂
bad luck lad! valiant effort
LOL @ dauphine....Brian "I'm not saying Geraint crashes, well yeah I am saying Geraint crashes on occasion"
MvdP has chosen the white shorts (and it's raining 8( )
Is there a good website which lists all the road races on? Hadnt realised there was still some racing left before the TDF!
I've looked before but can only usually find half the picture via the UCI site then a lot of articles written to gain hits which lack on actual content!
boom!
That sprint today, OMFG, how easy!
LOL Yellow (MvdP) in the break !!!! sure the other riders are well chuffed!
