I'm gonna give my old hardtail bike a 1x10 setup and use for winter, it's got a newish xt cassette and chain and xt rear mech,
So considering a 40t expander (and maybe the 16t replacement cog for both 15t/17t) on the rear, I ride 2-3k metres of climbs a week and like a granny as backup.
Which is the cheapest option for the 40t I see a few brands on eBay workcomponent but can't find any reviews.
Should I stick to hope, superstar, or oneup , anyone using the sunrace cassette and find it better

Anyway my main questions I have a m522 deore triple chainset (24,32,42t)

BCD IS 104 and 64mm,

Can I just use the middle chainring, how do I remove the inner and outer chainrings, do I need to, can I put a bashguard on, Or do I need a narrow wide chainring, extra bolts spacers etc
Ideally I'll I continue using the middle 32t or get a 30t chainring and fit to the crankarms .

Also will the long rear mech handle the 42t expander as easily as the 40T, or is the gap too big to the next 36t cog

Thanks in advance

I've done that to a 2x10 and 3x9. I've also bought an SLX 3x10 as a spare.

You need to mount the chainring on the inner of the middle. You'll either need shorter bolts or spacers that go on the opposite side (outer) mimicking the arms of the outer ring £10 from CRC If I recall correctly.. Or I guess you could use a bash guard if you felt you needed it.

Use a 10-42t on my 29er and had to remove the plastic spacer from the B-Tension bolt to get the derailleur to move out of the way enough.

thanks Mike very usefull, had a feeling i might need some spacers, probably wont bother with a bashguard just adding weight, i'll have a look at the spacers,
will the current chainring suffice, or is the narrow/wide one advised

I went from a Deore triple to 1x, some rings have spacers built in for exactly this purpose (such as the absoluteblack 32t I have). Just take everything off, then put the single ring on the middle of the triple.

I've done this on a deore triple crank (originally 9spd).

Remove triple rings, put new narrow wide (superstar are cheap, usually a code around) on middle ring position, I just flipped mine round rather than faff with spacers or shorter bolts, works fine. This does mean the bolt head doesn't sit in the machined seat, so is relying on the shank of the bolt in shear without any head support, I don't think I'll die from it.

I'm on a long cage XT clutch mech, works ok, though not as crisp after 100 miles as it was when it was all new, so may get a rad cage or goatlink thing for mech.

Sunrace 10-42 cassette, just works and not horrendously expensive (pre-brexit).

Current 32t will be fine, remove granny and outer ring, if you have one, replace outer with bash.

You'll need either a goat link or oneup cage if you want to fit a 42.

For best results go 11 speed, cassette, shifter, chain and rear mech, chainset will be fine.

thanks core, dirtydog, more things to think about, think I;m happy with the front end now, will see how it goes without the goat link to start,
ordered a 42T RSP expander, and will use the current chainset 32t middle ring.

its an old hardtail and so 11 speed isnt a priority, i have another bike with sram 1x11 hence me thinking of simplifying my least used bike.
Once the cassette and chain wearout, i'll go sunrace.
