The lace has snapped on my new boots 🙁
Are these easily fixed? I've contacted the company I bought them from but it may be quicker to try and fix myself..

If its a boa, get in touch with them and they will send a repair kit out for free. Easy to fit.

It’s Northwaves own system

Yeah, its NW. Their system is called SLW2..

In hindsight, I think velcro straps are much more suitable as a binding. More robust, less complex, etc

Has it actually snapped or has the end pulled out? If there's enough left on the reel you might be able to fix it back in place with a knot or some glue.

You could get a boa repair kit and use the wire from it.

North wave do sell spare wire to repair the system:

It seems like one end has lost a fixing which keeps it in place.

I've tried to thread it through again but it's just too difficult.

I wonder what actually keeps it in place to begin with and if it comes included with a replacement lace 🤔

I really dislike the Boas on my newish Northwave boots. That's all.

Your new Nortwaves are not fitted with BOA.

However, this seems to be a variant of Slw2 - they seem to want to be anchored to through a grommet at the front.

That is an impressive level of pendantry, especially considering most on here will know what boa means, and I imagine very few have heard of SLW2.

I ordered these exact boots a couple of weeks ago and sent them back to CRC. I said in a thread here just afterwards that the lacing appeared to be a poor design. All the leverage and upwards pressure from your foot is held on that one lace.

How's that pedantry? Does Northwave have a lifetime guarantee with their SLW2 dials? Does BOA have that annoying little catch that requires two hands to release the tension? Those are two important factors that differentiate BOA from SLW2, other than SLW2 being really hard to say quickly.

Sort of like calling a Dyson a Hoover, but in reverse. SLW2 don't seem to be on the same level as BOAs, and the customer service certainly doesn't compare, although I've yet to have one fail completely.

@raggatip - did yours fail also?

The repair is different and one company sends out free repair kits no questions asked.

Top tip - don't rely on pulling the shoe open to evenly release these style of fixings. I did, and only when the wire got knotted inside the BOA did I realise that doing this on my style of shoe pulls one wire more than the other, so one side gets pushed out. Now I pull the wire evenly from each side of the BOA before pulling my foot out. Also sometimes there is a way to derail or unhook the wire at the top of the lacing so you don't need to force the system to remove your foot if it gets jammed. I guess this applies to similar systems such as Northwaves.

Not under warranty but I just picked up new laces and the ratchet system from LordGun. Took 3 weeks to arrive from Italy though. €20.

@33tango

No they didn't. I just thought they looked like a weak design assuming they'd fail sooner rather than later. I hate poor design. It's why I hate my bloody SP dynamo hub...another crap design that needs to go back to Taiwan whenever the bearings fail.

Looks like that sending them back was a wise decision 🙂

Surprised they never replaced raggatip's with the SL2

I recently bought a pair of Northwaves with their SwL2 or whatever its called system. Nowhere near as robust or intuitive as Boa. Second ride in with them was particularly wet with loads of sandy gritty mud getting sprayed onto the shoes and the dials became jammed and I had to rinse them under a hot tap, still attached to my feet, to get them to open.

Fortunately I got the shoes for a cracking price in the Black Friday sales and can pick up a replacement lace set locally for around a tenner so not that bothered that they're a bit fiddly but I wouldn't buy another pair.
