Me and some friends are staying near Llandegla next month, riding Llandegla one day but the other day we could do with some advice. Where we're staying is between the Clwyds and Hiraethog forest and not sure which direction to head. From OS maps Clwyds look higher, steeper and more 'out there' riding but Hiraethog is less steep but more wooded.

2 routes which we've found are Loop de loop in the Clwyds and Tough at the top over in Hiraethog.

Can anyone give any advice on either of these routes please? Is one better for wet or windy days?

Are there any other routes we should consider? Looking at about 30-35 miles for the loop I think.

Look at Flattyres-MTB.co.uk, there are routes galore there. Clwyds are great though.

World's end near Llandegla is a good extension to make.

Snowdon!! - do a shorter ride in the morning and then head over to LLanberis in the early evening and set off about 4.15pm, by the time you get past the tarmac bit it'll be past 5.

ask Colin from flattyres if he will guide you - he is very reasonable! Hiratehoeg is lots of fire roads

Clwyds are exposed so you get great views either side and the trails hold up well throughout the year. Ish.

Moors are a bit meh in my opinion, just wine through endless forest. Better of the weather is bad obviously.

Clwydian hills over Hiraethog every time for me.

Some of the best bits are a bit cheeky (although well ridden and generally tolerated). As above, Colin (Flattyres MTB) has most of the legitimate options covered on his web site. A local guide (such as Colin) could show you more.

(I like the 'sheep track' around Moel Llys Y Coed and the white knuckle ride that is Keegan's lane.)

A careful study of (say) Strava heat map might well give useful info.

I've found the sheep track, that looks like a lot of fun. Thanks.

I have looked at Flattyres site before, will study again in more detail. Maybe the forest won't be a great idea if it's just fire roads etc. Snowdon doesn't appeal to me really. One day perhaps but not at the moment. I did Helvellyn a few years ago and I wasn't really a fan of climbing for 4 hours and descending for 30 minutes.
