Okay, so I've got the Strava App and I'm off out for my first 'Stravathon' on the road tonight

Forgive my naivety... if during my travels I go along say 3 segments that someone else has already created, will it automatically record my time for those segments?

yes.

when you finish your ride, it will upload it. after that it post-processes it to match it against segments, so a couple of minutes later, you'll be able to see all the segments you rode and any achievements (like KOM,2nd,3rd PB etc.) gained.

yep. you don't know what or how many segments you've done until you get home and upload it to strava and it gives you the rundown of how you did against previous times.

beaten to it!

Yes, as above - that's the clever bit of strava - it logs the segments you've ridden automatically once you upload it.

Be aware it's very addictive.

I now find that before a ride i check strava for segments i can include.

Nailing your first KOM is great tho 🙂

What an age we live in 😆

Thanks peeps, can't wait to get out and see how I do on all the local climbs!

I'm finding it tricky on sociable rides... if someone is a bit slow, I normally ride with them, but when I'm trying for a segment the temptation to drop them is very strong!

also, the 'usual' rest points you stop at to regroup may start to be missed in favour of getting to the top quick!

I went for a ride with a mate on Saturday who was dropping back... I rode to the top, then rode back down to join him 🙂 best of both worlds 😆

ok, another noob question, sometimes there are two segments almost the same but some have (AW) after the name, what does that mean?

For example me and a friend were out doing a few laps of the same trail his went to the actual trail name and mine went to the same name with (AW) after it.

Got a link to some examples? I wonder if they're the initials of the creator?! I've never seen this but only use on road.

can be highly annoying when you get home and realise that if you have only been 4seconds faster over a 2min climb you would have got KOM !

Agreed mrmo but I've gone back to a couple of those and made sure I set a serious time for KOM so hopefully will last a while!
