Hi all,

I have a SRAM XX1 rear mech and XX1 cassette (11 speed) and want a cheaper option cassette for a turbo wheel (yes the timing of this thought process with beautiful weather outside is odd 😀 )

Is there any issue swapping between:
1) A rear wheel with an XD hub and XX1 cassette
and
2) A rear wheel with a Shimano freehub and say a Shimano 105 11-30t cassette

Would there be any mech or cable adjustment required?

The reason I'm asking is I seem to remember something along the lines of the XD freehub and cassettes allowing the cogs to be moved a little more inboard. Maybe I am making that up though??? Even if there is a slight difference in where the cogs sit across each freehub, I'm guessing I can adjust the cable tension to take up any difference since it would only be on the turbo trainer???

Any help much appreciated!

Shimano and SRAM 11sp spacing are the same so indexing will be fine.

Keep to same brand and speed shifter as mech.

Obviously you’ll need to swap your XD driver freehub body for a Shimano fit one.

As indexing is the same, cable tension will not need adjusting unless it already had problems.

Chain will need shortening for a smaller cassette if fitting Road. You probably need a new chain anyway as new cassette and old chain tends to be a skippy experience.

B-tension will be miles off if dropping 12 teeth off the cassette and will definitely need adjusting. You want 1.5 links between where the chain peels off the cassette teeth and meets the jockey teeth. If you skip the road cassette and fit Shimano MTB you can ignore B screw unless you fit the 11-46 in which case you need to go there or you may find the mech shifting into the cassette teeth because of b tension (not the H/L limits which are about index centres not number of teeth)

Shimano Road cassettes usually need spacers behind the cassette that Road riders usually don’t appreciate MTB’s shouldn’t need so they’ll give confusing advice on this point. 11speed cassettes need more space than 10speed did. Shimano Road coped with this by making the freehub body longer. Shimano MTB made it work on the same length FH by dishing the cassette back over the spokes a little. Typical road wheels wouldn’t allow this due to angles. If your hub is Hope Pro4 then because Hope are arses you can remove the spacer you need for MTB, fit the spacer that came with your 105 cassette and you’re good to go. If you have any other hub, consult the manufacturer for 11sp road compatibility if determined to fit an 11sp road cassette.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not concerned about the spacing between cogs as I know these are the same between SRAM Shimano 11 speed stuff.

I have XD and Shimano freehubs for the Pro II evo hub I will use as the turbo wheel so freehub is fine too.

Chain no problem too as I'd do exactly as you suggest and buy a new chain and keep it with the turbo wheel.

Shimano MTB made it work on the same length FH by dishing the cassette back over the spokes a little.

It is this type of thing that was the root of my question. Are the XX1 cogs and Shimano cogs in the same place relative to the hub centre?

B-tension will be miles off if dropping 12 teeth off the cassette

Will I care or notice since this wheel is only to be used on a turbo trainer? If it is a massive problem then I guess I could just use a Shimano MTB cassette with more similar tooth ratios to the XX1 but I'd rather closer ratios on the turbo if there is no practical downside

Shimano and sram 11s stuff may have the same spacing, but 11s road and 11s mountain don’t. Road is closer together, so I think the tightest ratio cassette you’re looking at is 11-40.
