Evening folks,

How are we all?

I better set the scene before I beg for assistance - lol 😀

I've done pretty much no exercise since leaving school about 12 years ago so I'm carrying a bit of extra padding.

I've some very good and supportive mates who have done mountain biking for years and I decided that I would get fit and loose the lbs on a bike with them (can't be bothered with the gym).

Bought myself a 2013 Cube Acid, some gear from Tenn (as they do a good range of XXXL) and hit the trails... and loved it. I hit my first bike park last weekend and it was epic but I have bad knees and was getting nervous about a fall as I have no knee protection.

So here's the issue. As the company Tenn hasn't let me down so far I bought knee and elbow protection from them. The elbow pads are great but the knee pads are not the most comfortable as they are too small.

I got them in XL as this seems to be the biggest I can find, I can't find anything else bigger, can anyone be kind enough to suggest a brand that would be worth looking at?

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this!

Cheers.

Simon

i have some 661 veggies in a xl size, and they are too big for me.
i have lost a fair bit of weight of late.

so 661 is a good place to look, or you could buy mine.

Check out IXS, their pads come in about 5 or 6 different sized IIRC.

But everyone is a different size and shape, so what works well for one person may not work for someone else.

Simon,

Awesome to hear that you've found biking and have some mates to show you the way. That's more than half the battle. Knee pads are be a great bit of kit to help build confidence and keep you progressing. In addition I've found that learning to roll with a crash and falling correctly is another skill that adds to injury prevention and keeps you riding.

It's kind of hard to practice and the only way I can think to do so would be some forward rolls but kind of off to the side. Sorry if this seems odd and unsolicited but i've seen many new riders fall stiffly to the ground and hurt themselves even with pads where rolling out of it may have helped.

Happy riding

No idea about the pads OP but what I'd like to say is best of luck with your new found hobby. Cycling really does lose the lbs and its fantastic for the cardio too. Stick with it, which won't be hard given your bike... You'll pop out the other side a well honed mountain goat soon enough!! Bravo sir!!

Thanks so much for the advice folks, wasn't expecting many responses!

Ok, so 661 seem like the way forward. I'm ideally looking for knee and shin protection but failing that Ton I'll PM you.

Going by the size chart 661 Comp's look like a good buy.

And the only place I can find them in XL is (although not in stock :?):

http://www.biketart.com/25531/products/661-Comp-Knee-and-Shin-Pad-2013.aspx?utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=PriceComp&utm_term=Froogle&utm_content=None&utm_campaign=PriceComp1

What do you think?

Already exceeded the budget I (my wife told me ) made. Next month a pair of Five Ten's and some flat pedals with pins are on the order list so don't want to go mad with money.

As for learning to roll - good shout! I've had one fall onto moss and that's it. Based on how my life normally pans out the next 'off' won't be so soft! ha ha ha...

Thanks again folks!!!

Check out the classified ads on this forum, and maybe a few others like Pinkbike. People buy armor all the time that does not fit or that they find that they do not use. Folks on here are usually real good about things, just look at their history to see that they're not a brand new user who only got a login to sell something. There are more kids on Pinkbike, so you have to be a little more cautious. Paypal is a good idea, but not as a gift!

Already exceeded the budget I (my wife told me ) made.

Get used to this! Some on STW have to hide their bike buying habit like a drug addiction! Hang around here, and you'll see the threads about "need a new bike but it must be red so the wife won't notice" and "employer getting upset about me getting bike orders shipped to me at work but I don't want to die so I can't have them shipped to my house" 😀

Ill 2nd comments about 661. They are much larger sizes than any of the other brands out there. They slip off my stick legs constantly.

Ha ha ha... My Mrs is pretty good about it. I think she would rather have a happy (and more buff) husband than, well, me 6 weeks ago! lol

Just had a scan through the classifieds and loads of great stuff but can't see any knee pads in XL.

Found a few places online that do the RIOT range in XL so might take a stab at that.

Thanks again
