Currently got a DT Swiss M1900 wheelset with a 3 pawl alu freehub. After a year of use with a Sunrace 11-50 cassette I recently started getting some slippage in the smallest 11 tooth sprocket. The sprocket itself was slipping under load.

After lots of struggle I managed to get the cassette off. It’s badly gouged the splines where the individual sprockets sit towards the outside of the freehub body, but at the very end where the 11 tooth sits, the splines have worn through almost completely hence the slippage!

I obviously need to replace it but wondered if there’s a better option than the same thing that’s on there now? Any recommendations?

Do DT offer a steel freehub even?

Freehub body is specific to the hub, only other option is get a steel freehub if it’s available for your hub.

or a better cassette maybe? Do the SRAM freehubs have the same problem?

Xd does not have the same issue you screw the cassette on

My American classic hubs have 3 steel strip inserts that go on the freehub. This means that the lightweight freehub doesn't get chewed. Of the strips ever get damaged you just pop them out and replace them.

Im sure other freehubs have this option.

Hope do a steel freehub but the normal one is pretty tough anyway.

Shimano freehubs are usually steel.

I notice that Hunt also have what looks like a single, steel insert to stop the soft aluminium freehub from chewing. Will be interested to see if this actually works as every other wheel I have is aluminium and all need to have the edges filed down at each service to stop the cassette from jamming on the chewed up metal.

XD freehub, as said. You'd need to drop down to 10-42 though (11spd).

Some freehub manufacturers state that the cassette spider must be a one piece type. ie not made up of all spearate cogs. It's pretty hard to find which ones are like this though.

I bet DT Swiss do, I remember having a road wheel that the cassette embedded itself onto.

This one would be good

but not this one

Still, if they KNOW their freehubs are too bloody soft, why don't they sort it!?

There you are , I have the same cassette but on a 350 hub instead of 370 and it has also chewed it up.

The thin spline on the 11t is all the way through!

what you want is part code HWYABM00S5571S. That one is made from girders.

Whether you'd find one in the UK? Probably not. When you find one will you like the price? Also probably not.

one of my bike pet-hates this, just an inappropriate choice of material for the design, at least Shimano (who presumably originated it) stick to steel and Ti for theirs. XD solves the issue but ouch - that price...

Thanks for the replies. I’ve gone for the one liamvc96 linked to but found it in the UK at SJS cycles. Looks like it should work as states it’s compatible with 370 hub which it seems the m1900 uses and is steel. Fingers crossed.

Unless you have quite old wheels you might struggle with that freehub as it's a 2 pawl one I think and you'd want a 3 pawl. I might be wrong though.

Arghh, doesn’t say 2 pawl anywhere? Just assumed it was compatible as it says 370?

The current one I’ve got is 3 pawl. If this comes as 2 pawl will it not work at all?

Have you got a link for the one you saw on SJS blitz?

I couldn't find it after a quick search

I'd be 99.9% confident that is the wrong freehub.

That one is for the star ratchet hubs, not the ones with pawls.
