Has anyone tried both of these on the same bike (particularly in 29 flavour)?

My current Pike is a 2014 RCT3 29 running at 140mm, and I’m looking at one of the Fox Performance Elite 36’s with Boost spacing and EVOL spring (150mm).

Nothing wrong with the Pike, been serviced regularly, and it’s super plush.  However, the steerer on the Pike is a bit on the short side, so limited adjustability on bar height. I’ve also got a really nice Boost ‘plus’ wheelset that would fit the bike, if the fork was Boost.  The frame it’d be going on (1st gen RocketMAX) is rated forks up to 160mm, and I would mind taking the bike a bit more ‘all mountain’ in feel.

Ive had a quick go an a friends bike that’s got a 27.5” 36 RC2 160mm and the extra plushness and stiffness was really impressive, but I wondered if this was more to do with the RC2 and shorter 27.5” size(?).

What do you think?

I went from a similar Pike (150mm) to a Fox 36 FIT4 RC2 (160mm) on a YT Jeffsy 29er. There was a big improvement, the Fox is in a different league. Not sure how much better the RC2 is compared to the performance elite though.

Thanks for the feedback.  According to Fox, the Performance Elite 36 (EVOL FIT4 version) goes is the same as the Factory version, apart from black stanchions rather than Kashima.  Even the weight is the same.  Chain Reaction we’re knocking them out for £499 last week, so I took a punt and ordered one - haven’t decided whether to keep or return it yet though.

You could try running the Pikes at 160mm with the Debonair upgrade. That's what I've done on my RocketMAX from 140mm on non-boost Pikes and it worked a treat. Granted that doesn't help you use your boost wheelset though but definitely cheaper than new forks if it's more travel you're after.
