Fitted new sintered pads to my Avid Elixirs last night and have just been out to bed them in. They're now stopping pretty well but both front and rear are howling worse in the dry than the old worn ones did in the wet. I've cleaned the rotors and made sure the calipers are centred properly.
Just wondering if this is common and the noise will die down after a bit of proper use. I'm meant to be out riding tonight and can't face a couple more hours of howling brakes.
Any suggestions? (apart from buy new brakes 😉 )
Lightly sand your discs with some fine sandpaper then clean them off with IPA? Roughen up the pad surface again too and try bedding them in again.

This. Make sure you remove all the old pad material that has built up on the rotor, otherwise it will be persist. Took me chuffing ages to clean mine properly.
Assuming properly bedded and no rubbing... Take out pads and rotors.. Spray with brake cleaner and light it.. Literally. I use the one (i dont know the name) where you light an old gas cooker.. Its like a lighter with a handle and pointed tube where flame comes out. Light your rotors and pads with just the blue flame..Then spray back brake cleaner . It can go very hot be careful. Fixed my elixir 5 this way.
