The free wheel hub on my stumpjumper fsr seems to be making a gritty sounding noise and has a slight bit play. the bike is only 6 months old and not had a lot of use. any ideas?
Can i strip it down and regrease it?
DT Swiss 420 SL wheels
Can't find any documentation specifically for a 420 hub, but if it's DT Swiss then it'll be fully servicable, check out Customer Support section of their website. Cheaper Onyx type hubs are pretty simple to strip, requiring no more than spanners for the locknuts, hammer for tapping the axle and bearings out, and something to press the bearings back in, but if all the parts that can wear, have worn, you'll be looking at around £80 for parts alone(got 2 in the workshop like this at the moment).Higher end 240 types are also simple to service, but need an expensive tool to get to the ratchet/pawl mechanism and inner bearing(£60 for the ring nut tool, £220 if you want all the presses etc too).
In my experience the 420SL is an Onyx hub.
Service manual is here:
Easy enough to take off the freehub. The ones I have taken apart have had a snapped pawl or too much grease in them, so the pawls have clogged up and stopped engaging.
