got an annoying problem with the road bike. There is an annoying rattle from the lower jockey wheel and you can see that the chain isn’t sitting on the cog properly, it’s to the side which I’m pretty sure is causing the noise. I’ve tried all adjustments and even changing out the rear derailleur for a new one but it’s still the same. It gets louder in the big ring.
any ideas?
cheers
Hmm.
Some jockey wheels have a way round which they prefer to be, the teeth aren't quite in the centre so they work one way round but not the other (learnt that the hard way, many miles into the West Highland Way race in the pissing rain with really poor shifting) However, I would expect swapping mechs would solve that problem, although there is an easier way...
Swapping the mech out should solve most problems TBH. Are you sure the mech hanger is straight? Bent one of those isn't necessarily obvious but causes all sorts of issues.
Sounds like alignments...is it in all gears? Twisted hanger?
Its in all gears but seems worse/louder when i'm in the big ring at the front.
I've taken a photo which shows the chain not in alignment with the jockey wheel:
Not sure about the hanger - are there any easy ways to check?
Thanks
From the pic I'd also suggest a bent hanger. Have you had any bumps to it recently? LBS will align it for you but there are a variety of tools available, including various 'ghetto' versions.

I bought the frame 2nd hand - so who knows what's happened to it! I might get one of those alignment tools bought for the collection, i've watched a couple of video and it seems fairly easy to use.................... then i'll go out and order a new hanger when I snap it 😉
So I bought the tool and had a go. It did turn out to be a bent derailler hanger causing the noise. I spent about an hour or so messing with it and i've got it much better but its still not quite right so i've ordered a new hanger 🙂
A new hanger might not necessarily be spot on particularly if the frame is a little out.
Still, handy to have a spare hanger!
I had this with my recent 1x10 build ; the chain would catch or ride up the jockey wheel in the 2 top gears. The hanger was a bit out of alignment but what solved it was fitting an 11 speed upper jockey wheel in the lower position. They have longer and wider teeth and seem to pick up and guide the chain much better. Could be worth a shot.
