First time poster here, as just discovered SingleTrack...
Anyway, would really appreciate some fellow riders thoughts on this - Last week I dropped by bike off at my LBS for it's 1 year 'Free Service'.
I get a phone call yesterday saying it's ready for pick up. I pick it up today, and was handed a £120 bill!! Fair enough they replaced some bits and bobs, but I'd have appreciated a call first to say 'this and this needs doing' etc. plus, when I looked at the invoice, they charged £10 labour for changing some brake pads...
that normal??

Cheers

Yep, they're taking you for a mug mate, don't let them. They really should have called you first. Which bike are we talking about please?

I get a one year free service for my bike (excluding parts and labour). butyeah, I'd expect a call saying how much things will cost, I got stung by a shop when I booked a bike in for gears, brakes and a wheel true. He "serviced" the headset and charged me £15. To be fair I can grease a headset myself, just didn't fancy faffing with cables and can't true wheels very well!

they are not allowed to change parts without letting you know.

Tell them to put it back how it was.

Where do you get these one year free services from? I've heard of a 6 week service for cable stretch etc...

But a one year? That should be fork & shock service, bearings (if a full suss) complete cable change, brake bleed & new pads (if they've lasted a year) & bottom bracket...

Since when? It's an open contract when you leave something for repair, sure a good business will phone and say "it's going to cost x amount"

In theory though they can fit what they like if it needs it, same applies to car garages.

I always say that it's a free service but I charge for any parts I need to change.

the shop does a 6 week service and then an annual one for free. generally they're a great shop and the service is good, depending on who you speak too. been pretty happy to give them my custom in the past as they've been honest and helpful, up to now that is..!
so they ended replacing the bottom bracket, new chain, front and rear discs, trued up a wheel and serviced the headset.
now half of this i'd happily do myself, the other half, probably would have stumped up the cash. just annoyed that they didn't call me first.
thanks for the thoughts! i like the idea of getting them to put it all back especially....

unless you've been riding it every day for the last year.... "new discs"? **** off, I assume that they handed all your old parts over to you?

On the plus side if they have only charged you for parts saves you doing it yourself, and if it isn't right you can go back and moan 😀

Ask for the old parts back and an explaination of why they fitted all the parts, I presume the parts were needed?
