You always see someone on their bike wearing just a cotton t shirt, football shorts and no gloves.
Nutter.

Conversly, theres a guy who works here who seems to have at least 10 layers on when riding in regardless of the time of year

There was a guy at the Wiggle ride on Sunday in a short sleeve teeshirt. I was in thermals head to toe and still cold!

Living in a Swedish university town is good for seeing the extremes, especially the exchange students. Aussies who need to prove their manhood by only wearing shorts and 'thongs' through the entire Scandinavian winter. Chinese who wrap themselves in ankle-length down-jackets with multiple scarves and hats so that only their eyes are visible as soon as a cloud passes the sun.

Tbf, though, the locals are just as bad. After months of dark and cold, as soon as Spring makes a hint of an appearance most shed their clothes a little over-enthusiastically and then complains about how cold it is.

Germans are just the opposite. The minute the temperature drops below 20 degrees children are wrapped up in gloves, winter hats and scarves. Same for roadies too!

I like the commuters that have one of 'cycling outfit'.Which they then wear regardless of what the weather conditions are. This can be shorts,ss top and fingerless gloves, which they wear when it's raining and 3 degrees.Or jacket, roubaix tights and mits, that they wear in July when its 25 degrees.

Tis true - Yesterday, saw that very fella in footy shorts. My legs were cold in Endura trousers. So today wore leg warmers under the trousers. Get into work and there's a fella strolling over to the changing rooms in lycra shorts! How!?

Much the same with running. Saw someone out this morning in shorts and vest.

It's usually not the skinny guys 🙂

I'm often that guy in shorts and a tshirt when everyone else is wrapped- but with big massive winter gloves 🙂 It's the raincoat-in-summer guys I can't comprehend at all, you can be sweltering in a light riding top and then you see people wearing a binbag.

Your temperature sensors are faulty, it never gets sweltering in Scotland, it only actually gets vaguely warm 2-3 days a year!

I hate those times when there's a bit of moisture in the air (southerners call this "the great storm of ...") but it's warm enough that you know if you put your waterproof top on then you'll get just as wet from sweating.

Me too, I used to run hot all the time but now I'm 37 I feel the cold more. Does mean I'm not quite so sweaty in the summer though!

It's a calender based thing here in S Cataluña, on the 1st of October the winter coats come out together with hats, long trousers, gloves, scarves. Cyclists wear windproof jackets, bib longs and face masks or buffs pulled up to guard against the threat of certain pneumonia caused by breathing in air at a temperature below 20° As the actual temperature here didn't drop below 20 until early Nov, we continued to wear shorts and t shirts, much to the dismay of anyone that saw us.

There's a guy at work who started cycling in a couple of months ago. Bike To Work Scheme sorted him the bike, helmet and lights but he didn't really think about anything else so all he's got is shorts and a SS top. Which he is still wearing now.

He claims it's hardcore. Everyone else thinks he's a nutter.

A few years ago I went to Sardinia in March for some early season sunshine. We were in shorts and maybe a LS top at most, all the locals were in full winter coats still.

What damage would a 3 mile commute at 10 mph in just a t shirt do to your body at 0c?
I'm pretty sure I would die.

Ah, Noob heating - I used to have it, started this caper about 15 years ago, I've got a pic of me somewhere half way up the climb at Whites Level, frost on the ground, Endura Shorts and a cotton T, big smile on my face - I'm sure I'd be circling the drain if I tried that now, I think it was simply that I was so unfit the effort required kept me warm, or maybe it was my age... I didn't own a jacket until 2015, I went the first 5 years without a baselayer - now I 3 or 4 layers thick from Oct onwards.

I think I'll end up like the MTB equivalent of a BWM rider, spending the first 15 mins of any ride plugging in various heated clothing items into batteries to keep me going.

Used to go riding with a lad called Shaun who wore a string vest and shorts (just read that back - for clarity they weren't string shorts, that would have been a sight to behold)on a ride up Snowdon in November, there was snow on the ground which was being whipped up by the wind. Got some funny looks.

To be fair, even in the snow, by half way up that climb I'm in a base layer and thin jersey at most.

big differnence in clothing requiremtns between commuting/roadying where the windchill is an issue and mtb when most of the time your not going fast enough to feel chilly

Is quite easy on road, just zip or unzip layers (jersey, gilet, etc.) MTB is trickier as there is usually a fair bit of hanging around as mates regroup, and it's usually at the top of some windswept exposed hill where you're desperately seeking shelter behind some tiny pile of stones finding every bit of kit in your pack to put on!

Not really affected by the cold weather, shorts with t-shirt and windproof through the winter. The bear bones winter event will put me to get though.

Would sir like more chips for his 'northern' shoulders? Maybe they might slide off too easily 😉

So long as there's one for each shoulder so I keep my sense of balance 😆 Covered with gravy of course!

There's a guy I see every day at 5 am ,standing outside a school in short lycra ! & we have a guy who commutes every day(August!) in a gore phantom jacket. I always wince when I see them.
We did the school run on bikes yesterday. Character building for L'il J.
I went dressed as Nanook of the North.ha.

Much the same with running

I never did much running but found that I got a lot hotter than I do when cycling so would wear less. Presumably the slower speed has a lot to do with it.

As for cycling, I have to wear a hat if under about 8 degrees as I get ear ache and I have to wear gloves under about 10 degrees as I have poor circulation in my hands.

I rarely go beyond bib knickers and arm warmers on the bike, maybe a filet if it's windy or rainy. Been runnning more the past 3 winters and think I could rival epicyclo for my aversion to overheating, 2 degrees last Sunday and the wife met me for coffee after my 10k run and couldn't work out how I hadn't died in shorts and a vest, had taken off my long sleeve base layer after a mile.

I think it is! This year is the first time I've had to resort to anything other than shorts for my legs. It's not even that cold here yet - yesterday was the first morning with frost on the cars - and I'm already wearing thermal tights! A few years ago I had to get a warm jacket. Go back to when I was 30 and it was shorts, base layer and a long sleeve top for when it got below 0. Bizarrely I'm better at regulating temp in the summer too 😕

I've refused to wear overshoes until December. CBA with faffing this morning so I wore two pairs of socks

Overshoes next week me thinks

I'm in LS base, LS jersey and primaloft-fronted gilet. Usually have my Rapha brevet gilet over the top for visibility. Need to increase visibility of that primaloft gilet really

I'm sure the gloves I was wearing yesterday were anti-thermals. 😳 Despite the rest of me being nicely warm, even on the verge of sweating, my hands got colder and colder as I went on. Headed out of work toasty warm and by the time I got home my hands were like blocks of ice. They just wouldn't warm up even on a fifteen minute hill climb.

This time last year we did a weeks cycling in Tenerife. Every ride bar the Teide climb we all wore shorts and shorts sleeves. We were bemused to see the sunday riders wearing buffs and looking like they were doing the NC500 in January in Scotland. Also noticed every man and their dug in Spain wears full lycra for riding Mtb's.

Due to my poor circulation in hands I wear what are almost like ski gloves when temperature is around zero. They are so effective my hands are usually sweating when I get back from the ride.

😆 @ saxonrider! I remember when living and skiing in BC ( Fernie and Kimberley), it'd be minus 15, minus 20 etc and the dudes from the prairies would be dressed only in a plaid shirt and jeans telling us how warm it was compared to the minus 40's they had just come from!

The Nino Schurter look is very popular. The Italian roadies prefer white bibs with no jersey, Oakleys and no helmet

Kids on our road teams have to wear longs below 20deg, rules innit.
