Looking for a No. 2 hardtail for family rides.....

I've always gone secondhand for this sort of thing but I've noticed that Decathlon's Rockrider 8.1 is only £449...with Juicy 3's, full Deore and RS Tora forks....looks like an irresistable bargain really...

Anyone spotted anything that's even better value for money? 18" flavour preferred.

As I'm sat at home for the day, I might just buy one today....!

I've got a carrera vengeance from late 2009, was also 'reduced' to about £300 - I have a feeling the £500 price they quote never really exists. I've basically not maintained it, and ridden it a fair bit over the last year and a bit, and it still works. I change disc pads once the brakes stop stopping, oil the chain when it dries out / gets rusty, and I did once put some grease on the forks because they stopped bouncing up and down. It could possibly do with a new cassette & chain at some point now, but I'm not going to bother until it starts skipping or something. Quite a lot of its use has been towing a bike trailer, which it is fine for too. I have ridden with other people with fancier bikes, and I don't think the bike made me any slower than them (although I am slow as hell on descents due to fear / lack of skills!).

Only thing about it is that it needed lots of things tightening (including stem & handlebars!), gears adjusting etc. when I bought it, don't expect to ride home from the shop unless you bring tools.

The cheapest Canyon bike?

http://www.canyon.com/_uk/mountainbikes/bike.html?b=2050

Bit more money though at £519 but you do get Recons and Easton finishing kit. And an XT rear mech.

Guess you'd have to factor in shipping cost though which is another £50.

Decathlons have always been good value for money, i was very annoyed when my local branch closed and moved to a terrible location for me so i never go anymore.

Nothing on Pauls cycles to pick from? They usually have some bargains from 2009/2010?

RST will be fine, the bikes only for family rides anyway isn't it so the fork won't be getting a hard life.

If you like the bike you can always pick up a decent cheap fork off the classifieds in the future.....?

Well, I did what I threatened to do & bought one yesterday....this is what I went for:

Carrera Kraken in Halfords: full SRAM 9 spd groupset (X5), Suntour XCM forks, quite a nice 7005 frameset, Tektro Auriga hydraulics, TRuvativ cranks, Conti Speed Kings (!)....it was the last one in my local Halfords and has a few chips/scratches so I got it for £339...been out on it today and I'm quite impressed (says the man with a £3k Lynskey in the garage!!)

...perfect for the job and being 9 speed all the bits in my spares box will fit when the time comes...
