Hi Folks

Anyone else suffer from mild vertigo when night riding? By vertigo I mean not really being balanced (sometimes losing where 'up' is), regularly not being on the line you want, correcting and over correcting, normally on tight, faster sections where you're flipping from one corner to the next. Was out in fog this evening, which made it worse.

Tilt your light up so it's pointing further down the trail.

Sounds like a normal night ride to me. All part of the fun surely?

I have a friend like this. I think it is all down to the lack of peripheral vision and the subsequent loss of all the sub-conscious balance and positional cues.

I think your brain goes into overdrive searching for this information and becomes increasingly confused when it can't find it.

My suggestion that may work is extra lights illuminating your peripheral zones, but it could be issues to do with depth perception resulting from one light source. Try helmet and bar lights?

Pretty normal. Doesn't happen every time for me but do notice it sometimes. I have 4k lumens up front too but don't usually take a headlamp which I probably should as im sure it would help.

I'm the opposite I get vertigo on slopes in daylight but find when riding at night with a really bright light I just focus on my route and dont get the weird effect of the slopes around me. Feels almost like i have blinkers on which is ace for the vertigo type effect I get.

Did a night ride with a dimmer light the other day and I had a few moments of weird perpective. Its more pronounced if there is a slope away from me on the left, not so bad if its on my right. Annoying when what im riding is relatively straight forward but my head gets confused because of a nearby slope.

First time it happened I was about 7 or 8 and I was on a very steep hilside in wales, gave me a terrible fear of slopes and slipping . . I have battled it since then and I have promised myself that one day I will go skiing - not just yet though!

I do ride with two lights - a Diablo on the helmet and 1000 lumens on the bars, which is plenty, but take the point about peripheral vision. Perhaps too much light forward. I reckon there's probably a bit to do with moving shadows as well...

Just interested to hear if others find the same. It's a bit frustrating riding a trail you know well (Swinley Deerstalker in this case) badly, and not getting into a rhythm 'cos you're not on the line you should be!

Perhaps sharkattack is right - all part of the fun!
