Just wondered if someone could suggest some nice places to ride my new toy around oxfordshire. Not looking for gnar, techno fest mountain bike trails (if only they existed around these parts) just nice off road rides with some scenery to take in that will be enjoyable on a CX bike.

I've barely done any riding this winter as i usually have to drive at least an hour and a half to find something that makes suspension forks worth bothering with, hence the CX bike.

If you're near south Oxfordshire there's lots of easy off road bridleways. Pick up an OS map and join a few routes.

Possible ones....

Watlington - ridgeway and woods south of m40 up and round stonor and pishill
Goring - hartslock woods towards reading then up through Whitchurch hill then stole row
Goring - onto the ridgeway then over to wantage, nice ride back on the road too
Wallingford - out up grims ditch over to Nuffield and checkendon and stoke row

Strays into west berks sometimes though 😉

A lot is pretty awful at the moment but you could try wallingford from mongewell to goring to whitchurch along the thames then down the hill and immediately left towards mapledurham then by road and track to woodcote and back via the myriad little lanes.

Parts of the ridgeway by chinnor are almost unrideable.

There is a lot more gravelly tracks to west of Didcot.

You could also pinch the route from the woodcote cx sportive just held which should still be on the website?

Good tip, cheers.
Anything likely to be drier out Bucks way?

Cheers folks. Yes, just going out on the road bike I can see that more or less everything is a swampy mess at the moment. But it's nice to know there are some decent rides locally.

BTW the swampy mess of the ridgeway was actualy a lot of fun with narrow tyres. Not much standing water just non sticking mud. Slow but fun.

Exploring the Ridgeway is always nice. You can yourself lost for hours, it's lovely! Some of the paths are pretty weatherproof. I went out from Compton recently for a 20 miler and saw about 2 puddles.

If the Ridgeway is anything like a few weeks ago (bearing in mind the weather recently!) ... then theres some serious mud up there in places (Wantage to Goring).
I cant wait for some dryer weather as Ridgeway is the bulk of my riding unless I drive a hour plus to a trail centre.

I'd say it's actually worse! Hasn't had a chance to dry out at all. Was up there yesterday, standing water in lots of places.

Yup it's a granny ring mudfest of the highest order. It's a great bike handling skills opportunity though (keeping positive). My mud bike out of action till this pm though 🙁

Hmm, this isnt encouraging me to get out tomorrow. Like wise, I just wanna get out and ride!
Guess I'll go Upton then up to the A34 and have an explore round the west side of the A34 ... not really feeling like slogging it out over to Wantage on the Ridgeway again if the wind is as bad as the forecast says...
Might well see some of you folks out 😀
