Anyone know where you can get really nice looking disks to replace the stock ones provided by the big manufacturers?

160mm if it matters.

CRC do fancy ones, but they are £45 each. Stuff with flames, dragons etc. on them.

I'd be interested in custom ones, if I could afford them. However, I feel that they would be quite a bit more than standard rotors & my sensible side would say no!
Some of the 'funky' rotors also look as if quite a lot of material has been removed - I wonder what testing they have been through to make sure the rotor doesn't just snap from the spider.

I'd like to see some comedy ones with hamsters cut out, or flowers or something.

The whole flame/sharp edge thing is a bit dull.

Does it matter what they look like? How they work is rather more important - or is your bike for looking at not riding?

I don't like those very much Cha****ng (or the alligator ones) but there is one on discobrakes which is OK, bit boring but it's better than the avid one.

Samuri, I've got one of those discs from Discobrakes, in reality it looks really cheap and nasty, you want XT rotors they are nice.

Nice discs...nice discs.... eh?! You all need to ride more; a discs a disc, so long as it works, isn't worn and doesn't squeal.

TJ and Aviemoron, it's possible to have form and function, bikes do not have to look crap.

Do you want to compare mileage or number of times out on a bike? I'm guessing I'm going to win that one.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a bike to look the way you want it to. I want something that looks better than the Avid disks, I'm amazed it's an issue for some people.

I just like Shimano XTR centre lock discs. Can you get a better looking disc? I thing round discs look much better than a wavey ones. They work better too!

Samuri - you slightly misunderstood me. I know from your posting you ride a lot - its just I can't see the point of possibly compromising function for looks - and while its nice to have your bike look nice it rates far down my list of priorities.

I actually have a set of hope rotors with the holes as lightning flashes. rather nice

Why not contact hope - I can't find custom rotors on their site now but they certainly used to do them

Samuri, any what colour/best looking type thread attracts negative comments. Don't worry about it. The fact they take the time to comment on it speaks volumes.
(and fwiw i prefer the standard Avid G2/3's, and spunk the dosh on straitline levers 😉 )

You were saying I love my bike TJ, like this. oooh oooh oooh. I quite like the Hope V2 actually, pirty it doesn;t seem to come in 160mm.

Formula Oro is winning at the moment, I'm sure that will be good performance as well as looking nice IMO.

Wasnt there a company in northern ireland that did really good discs, and special, massive ones for a hope mono6, something like 280mm discs? I think they were called raven industries or something like that...

dick, those ride it like you stole it ones - wouldn't the writing be backwards if they were mounted the right way round?

bad news brown.
in my experience, unless the track widths are the same, you can end up buggering up your brakes.

tfb, they would be the wrong way around if you were viewing it from the right, but brakes go on the left :s
so no

the arms should lead forward towards the hub, so braking pushes down the arm, not pulls across it.

The Artist, I've got Hope floaters on my Cham, and because it looks like a motorbike, I can a) make broom broom noises, and b) I look well cool, c) girls notice me more, and d) I go faster.

All true, thanks to Hope...

Thats the kind of needless aesthetics we should all aspire to.
TJ can carry on riding around in a hairshirt if he wishes.

I'd like rotors with lazer cut outs of animals you see while riding- squirrels, wabbits, deer, sheep, doggies & beastwithtwobacks.

i know which way round the braking force should apply to the arms, and i'm still sure they're the wrong way round - if you imagine a mountain bike with the braced arms on the rotors pointing forwards, then in the picture we're effectively looking at the side nearest the drivetrain, with the front of the bike to the right. i'm positive!

cf. this:
[img] [/img]

correctly mounted rotors. you can't mount those ones with the writing on the correct way round for the writing to be read from the left, the "outside"... you just can't!

It is if you go with perceived wisdom...It's not clear to me that the rotors must be mounted a certain way though.

I would say that rotor should be mounted the way we're looking at it now. That way the spokes will 'lead' as they rotate and I don't suppose it matters which way round it is mounted, the spokes aren't going to compress at all.

As I still own the disc rotor and have done since new, I'm afraid you are wrong Flatboy - they got ordered from Hope and the order simply asked for the words required...I gave them the words and they made the rotors - I'm assuming as it was Hope that made them, they know the way to mount them and therefore cut them accordingly.

They were used on some very early Hope DH4 Pros...

hope stopped making them rotors dick due to the letters creating stress raisers and them cracking , catastrophically in some cases , mind a guys sintesi bazooka 01/02 model being able to fit a car tire in the rear end when his rotor snapped at the writing and jamming in the caliper.

hum, you are right flatboy, thats a very odd rotor, looks like one edge is leading, then looks like the other is.

i submit to your glory (boo)

rotor arms wouldnt compress, but they might sheer if you went against the grain?

good good - i was more worried that my spacial awareness had gone totally out of the window!

trail rat, that's weird that that's how they were made because i didn't think any manufacturer made them like that, they're normally the other way round. weird one.
