I shouldn't worry about pedals, they'll stick old school cages on so you can just use trainers (which, for a first time, is fine)
Just don't stop pedalling...

Having just done a taster session at Manchester the worst that can happen: you will love it and want a track bike, i do. Sadly i dont live close enough to a track.
Did the course this time last year, great fun but hard work and a bit frightening to begin with. Gloves and helmet are the only thing you must have. I wore trainers so didn't have worry about cleats.
Whats the waiting time to get onto the beginners session?
not sure, but the session i am on is July, this might be to do with the organiser though.
You will get roasting zapping around a track!
