Hi
I've not posted before and I'm a complete newbie when it comes to all things bike ESPECIALLY
trying to fix them
HOWEVER I've decided to dip my toe in and so I wanted to replace front rings myself.
I have a Genesis Core 20 which runs Octalink crankset. I took the crank bolts off both sides, removed drive side and replaced rings. But when I tried to get non drive side crank arm back on it won't go. There appears to be something covering the threads.
I realise that I may simply be being a dumpling here but it's doing my nut in as I can't figure it out.
I have tried to upload a pic via Flickr but I'm in my iPhone just now and I'm not sure it'll work either.
Any advice before I throw myself in the Clyde?
When you pulled the crank arms off did you have to use a plug for the crank puller to push against? (a plug that fits inside the BB spindle) If so is that still in place?
If you remove the crank arm, does the bolt screw into the BB by itself?
Hi
Yes I did use a plug to pull crank off drive side. I've removed it and the crank from drive side and yes crank seems to be going back on no problem. The problems the non drive side I can't see the threads
Also I haven't had the BB out or anything
Check the bolt threads into the BB spindle without the crank arm attached.
The bolt doesn't attach to the arm, only to the spindle.
That looks to be seated fine, to me - but there seems to be something blocking the inside of the BB axle (Possibly the crank puller plug that wordnumb suggests - if you didn't have the lerger cap on the puller, this might happen)
If you remove the bolt from the drive side, you should be able to push a long screwdriver through from that side, to try to clear it out.
As a newbie repair person, this site may help you. It was invaluable and still is at times to me.

That pic looks like the washer from the crank bolt is between the axle and crank arm rather than on top of the arm
Zoomed in a fair bit and changed my mind
Ignore my first vit
I did have the cap on the puller and ive still got it so its definetly not inside. There is something blocking the inside of the BB axle on the non drive side as you suggest and its prohibiting me fron getting the crank bolt to thread back on. I cant move it with a screwdriver or anything. Its solid.

I've not had non drive side crank off.
If you can see something blocking the inside of the BB spindle (possibly a washer, as orangeboy says) maybe use a hacksaw blade to cut it into segments, then hammer and screwdriver to tap it out. The thread shouldn't be badly damaged. The inside of the spindle thins a little way into the non-drive side.
Otherwise new BB. Remember to get the matching shell size and spindle length.

phew, finally got there!
can anyone advise please.
here is what i see when i look into inside of BB spindle.
knock the arm back off with a block of wood and have a proper look.
forgive my ignorance but ive not had the non drive side arm off. can i just knock it off as you suggest?
I don't see what you could have done to the crank bolt thread if you haven't removed the non-drive crank. If the bolt came out then it should go back in again.
Might be worth removing the drive-side bolt and seeing whether it will thread into the non-drive side. That would show whether it's the bolt that's the problem or something obstructing the thread inside the spindle - but usually you'd only have something wedged in there if you've used a crank puller wrongly.
Use the crank puller to get it off.
Just curious - the blockage isn't part of the crank bolt, is it?
Do both crank bolts look the same?
I used the crank puller first time without the wee plug as I didnt realise I needed it. Could I have pushed something from middle of BB spindle right through doing this?
The drive side bolt wont fit. there is a clearly something there that wasnt before.
so have you had the non-drive side off at all? Why did you take it off?
I guess you should probably use the crank puller to take it off but if you've not had it off I don't see what you could have done except leave part of the crank puller in there if you used it on there already.
Is the bolt okay? If you remove the drive side bolt can you see all the way through the hole in the middle of the BB?
Not had non drive side off at all. I can see right through but only coz this 'thing' has a hole in it.
i think you are right thought. it must bew a bit of the snidey crank npuller
Thanks for all your help and advive. I think a new BB is required. Ah well you gotta start learing sometime
eh? Have you tried tapping something through from the other side to try and push it out?
Aye, but i think I may have forced it onto the threads. Its probably stuck good style but im going to give it another bash!
OK!
Thank you SingleTrack'ers for your help and advice.
And thank you my mate Hainman for putting me on to the forums in the first place.
This is my first time posting and your posts helped me fix my issues.
It was inface a piece of the tool that had got stuck inside. I took a hacksaw, screwdriver, and hammer to it and along with 5 bottles of beer sorted it out!
Thanks once again.
This probable wont be the last you hear from me!
