I shall be in taihape for about 10 to 12 months and was wondering if anyone knows of any mountain biking in that area

There is certainly riding at Rotorua but that is a good few hours drive. saw some signs along the Hutt river just north of Taupo, Lots of moor and mountain type land near Wakapapa to the south of Taupo. However i get the impression that access in NZ isn't that good compared to the UK. There are footpaths but didn't see much in the way of mtb tracks.
