Im on my 2nd pair (1st pair fell apart JRA) and they are already showing signs of weakness- One axle is too tight the other is too loose. Looking at the shimano diagram I undo the brass coloured thread and the lot pulls out, is this correct ?

If they are less than 3 years old send em back under warrenty - i've had 4 pairs so far - and I just ride mincy XC trails - the new XTR pedals really arnt as good as the old XTR were - I've still got some 6 year old XTR pedals going strong....

I've just had the new XT ones fail after only 4 outings, put some old spuds back on which keep making an appearance as the quest for form over function continues to make pedals weaker and weaker ?

In a word yes.
Once the body's off you can adjust the bearings using the two nuts on the end of the axle.
