looking for thoughts and experiences please. My trusty 2007 Spec stumpy fsr stock wheels have finally reached the end of their life. They have done well to keep going after 2 trips up and down Snowdon, all bike parks in Wales and lake district since i have had them with regular sandy outings at Swinley.
Local bike shop has offered me a pair of Mavic ST's for £400 as they say they are having problems shifting higher end 26inch wheels or suggested hope tech xc or enduro. I have always fancied a bit of hope bling on the bike but mavics seem a good buy. I have a tendency to pop rear spokes as I don't pick careful lines all the time.
My other thought is custom made wheels around hope pro 4 hub.
Thoughts/experiences/suggestions welcome

I'd avoid the STs given that it sounds like you're not too kind on wheels - not cheap to fix or particularly easy to find replacement spokes, plus they're not really designed for abuse. I've been very happy with my Hope Tech Enduros. Given your spoke-popping history, I'd avoid the straight-pull option and get conventional J-bend spokes.
thanks qtip, I think that is where my thoughts were going but great to bounce it off this forum.
I'm 105kg, but tend to be fairly light on kit, dunno why, I'm not a wheels on the ground type of guy, it's just rare that I brake anything other than for some reason* dampers.
If you're considering hope I have a set of brand new ProII hubs built into Funn XLrater rims. Cost north of £400 at RRP, think I build them for about £300, I'd sell them for the price of the hubs (£200, otherwise they'll just get stripped for the hubs). Never used them because I had (or actually still have) a set of Hope XC/Bulbs in EN521 rims which are probably almost as good and I never got around to getting 20mm adapters for the Pro2!

White rims, silver spokes, gold hubs.
QR rear, front is bare with no adapters.
Wheels/tyres/cassette not included, although I could throw in some tyres if only to protect them in transit as I'm sure I've plenty.

I'm of a similar weight - I'm using Hope Enduros and very pleased with them.
My old bike came with a pair of Shimano XT Trail wheels (26") and they were superb. Four years of abuse, no broken spokes, never went out of true (although I did snap the rear axle which subsequently destroyed the hub - replaced under warranty, no problem). They can be had for around £200 a pair at the moment. Really good wheels.

If you're not wanting a bitten twice shy situation, then buy Hope on Stans Flow rims if you fancy a shoddy built wheel or rims that ding, Mavic are the way errrrrrr backward!
Hope Tech Enduro or Mavic 521s, reasonable weight and bombproof.
As a 115kg rider, who would not be best described as 'finessed', i use 521's in 26" flavour and Flow Ex's in 27.5. Both seem to stand up to whatever i throw at them. Rocks, DH, jumping etc: All dressed onto hope pro2's. Cant go far wrong.
