Was reading and came across this thought id share.

New 105 looks very nice altho expensive. Also peaked my interest was the ultegra road cluth mech or RX805 as it will be known

Bit half-arsed that RX mech. On its own it makes very little sense, needs a 1x chainset to go with it

I thought the whole point of it was for riding over cobbles to stop the chain jumping.

Not sure I agree with that, given Shimano had clutch mechs way before they had 1x chainring.

For cobbles and rough roads, gravel and cx bikes I can see it being useful not that I have lost a chain with a normal mech riding those kind of things (yet)

The ultegra rx will work with a double up front so it will be interesting to see if shimano do a single ring.

i think the market is now proven so they need to get onboard

Yay, 10s compatible cassette.

Is the market for single rings proven? They'll never take off on the road as roadies like lightweight and close ratios, no one will be ditching a 38t chainring for a 50t cassette. Gravel bikes are niche and fragmented, most still come with a double and a lot come with MTB components. CX maybe, but that's another niche (mostly as a place roadies send their old group sets to die so not a big market).

Even if they do cater for it, they'll just offer a dummy left bifter.

Shimano don't do niches, they didn't do a fat bike crank and even their TT offerings are a bit tokenistic compared to SRAM.

On the other hand they did push 15mm axles successfully and direct mount rim brakes (unsuccessfully?). So expect them to release a quartet chainset before a single!
