Something a bit different to the usual 'new bike thread'.
My wife is paraplegic and relies on a wheelchair to get around.
She's fairly mobile & active and ins't afraid to try going to new places.
Back end of last year we did the Snowdon Miners Track on her normal wheelchair which was a huge achievement for her.
We regularly go to Lake Vyrnwy and make our way up to Rhiwargor Falls and along a few other tracks.
This is quite hard going in her normal chair and her hand cycle only really works well on tarmac or flat gravel.

So whilst scouring ebay the last couple of weeks I happened across a used Mountin Trike.

I'd been after one for a while but couldn't justify the cost of a new on and I'd missed a couple of secondhand one.

So a cheeky bid later and this arrived today:

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

Suspension is 3 Rockshox Monarchs, 24" Halo wheels & tyres, braking is via a single lever controlling 2 Avid hydraulic calipers and steering is done with the right hand lever directing the back wheel.

Hoping to get her out on it this weekend - should make our walks over the Chase and other places easier.

Here's Martyn Ashton on his:

It does mean that I won't have a new bike this year - but she's worth it!

Oh wow that's a beast!

Before I got to the pics, I was going to suggest one of those things Ashton has 🙂

So come on, have you had a go at it yet? She sounds like an incredibly strong woman and I hope she enjoys it!

Thanks all.
Mrs is a bit overwhelmed at the moment - hadn't told her I was getting it.
Hoping to get out on it tomorrow or Sunday.
First impressions are it's really well thought out.
Tim, the guy who designed it is an MTB'er.

So bit of an update on this.
Has been used a couple of times since we got it - not as much as we'd like but have had loads on with the kid's & half term etc.
So first impressions are she quite likes it - what she has found though is that it's a bit undergeared - currently 22t/22t so fairly sedate and she found it hard to get any speed up.

So I spoke to Mountain Trike and ordered some larger 26t rings for the front - this is the max size they recommend to still allow decent off road performance and climbing.

So these arrived in the post today:[img] [/img]

Waiting on a SRAM single speed chain to arrive tomorrow so that I can get a couple of extra links into the chains.

Decided it could do with a clean the other day too, so while the weather was nice I cleaned it and took a few more detailed pictures:

[img] [/img]
Rear shock and steering gear

[img] [/img]
RHS lever and steering control

[img] [/img]
LHS lever and brake

[img] [/img]
Brake line t-piece

[img] [/img]
Brake calliper & mount

[img] [/img]
Drive gear, brake and shock set-up

So hopefully Sunday afternoon I should be swapping the gearing over and seeing how she gets on with that.

And just for fun because the Scout needed cleaning too, His & Her's matching rides:

zippykona

Could an e bike motor be fitted to this?

I've been wondering that myself.
Need to look into how the add on motors work with a normal bike and see what I can come up with.

Looks good. Currently having an Ice Trike being built for our son. Can see him wanting something like this for off-roading.

There are 12" hub motor wheels available for the rear. I think normal e bike hubs cannot be used one sides so couldn't go in the main wheels Adding in a motor to that drivetrain looks pretty tricky? With it being a trailing rear wheel tho maybe a motor wouldn't work? Might make the steering go allfunny as its pushing rather than being dragged?

Really like that. As the owner of two trikes myself. I would have thought an electric assist hand cycle like a Varna Liberator is also possible but probably rather rare over here?

I wish - was just a happy coincidence that a red one came up, previous one I bid on and lost was Kawasaki green lol

Not sorted tubeless yet, will see how it goes - think it has slime tubes in at the moment.

I've used the slime tubes to good effect actually. Heavy as hell but worked really well for me.👍

Wow Amazing... My 10 year old is in a chair and she also has a trike. It was a bespoke build when she was younger so now it's time she got a new improved one. Ideally this is the sort of spec and build quality we'd want.

Update us on how it performs!

Happy riding...

Is it a ratchet system for the drive? How loud is it when coasting?

Really cool, when I saw those last pics it made me think of these if you wanted to pimp it a bit.

Thanks for the link - hadn't seen those before.
A brake upgrade is on the cards if she keeps it.
Might swap to Shimano though as all the other bikes in the garage have them - easier to bleed/set up than most I find.

@futon-river-crossing if you speak to Mountain Trike they can arrange a demo.
They've also got some for hire at a couple of National Trust places depending where you are.

Well not much has happened with the Trike - having a new kitchen and other stuff done so riding & tinkering has taken a back seat.

Regarding the previous post about adding a hub motor - Mountain Trike have done just that and added it to their range.

Mountain Trike eTrike

[img] [/img]

Handily you can also by the add on kit separately - might be a future upgrade!

Wow, what a coincidence!

Could be the last piece to make it perfect. Cracking bit of kit this though.
