Just finished as the bleedin’ snow started to fall! So, some indoor shots for now.

Not superlight, but just about as light as I am going to get a Turner Sultan with Fox F34 forks built tough enough for trail riding.

As a taller chap, the 29er looks, feels and rides 'right'. Don't think I could go back to a 26er now.

Wanted it as black as possible, and with the new ‘black on black’ finish on the 2013 Easton Haven carbon kit I think I have just about achieved that. All of the decals are a very subtle. Almost looks like the wheels have no decals at all. Can’t wait to get it out there and dirty.

Frame - Turner Sultan (lge)
Fork - Fox Float F34 29er 140 FIT CTD
Aheadset - Chris King Inset 7
Chainset - Shimano XTR
Pedals - Shimano XTR
Front Deraileur - Shimano XT
Rear Deraileur - Shimano XT Shadow +
Shifters - Shimano XTR
Brakes - Formula R1
Chain - Shimano XTR
Cassette - Shimano XT
Wheels - Easton Haven Carbon
Tyres - Schwalbe Racing Ralph EVO Snakeskin
Stem - Thomson X4
Bars - Easton Haven Carbon
Seatpost - Thomson Elite
Saddle - Fizik Tundra 2 braided
Grips - Race Face Lock On

Yes, that might well be coming off! In fact, it is now removed. Just not black enough!

Gloss black decals on the matt black frame would look pretty good I reckon. Very nice bike either way.

very very nice :D, but.... did you consider the XL? the sizes are much shorter on the newer sultans

i don't need anything longer than a 70mm stem on my large mk1 sultan (still going strong) - but would need a XL in the new model

plus these new ones are much slacker - it longs like you are rocking a 90mm stem!

I am on the border between a L and an XL. I always prefer the chuckability and standover of a smaller frame. The handling is already a bit lazy being a long travel 29er, so the couple of cms on the stem doesn't bother me. Also, given the size of the frame, actually them stem is in proportion. I am still a bit old school, although I do know that recent vogue is for shorter stems.

Graphics are lazer etched unfortunately fathomed.

That is the nicest looking DW Turner I've ever seen.

Bet it goes like stink too, mind you with the money that's in it it had better. Enjoy.

That's really nice! Really good build, I think that on a 29 the carbon wheels are a great idea and those fox 34's work really well. You know best but it would be worth trying a shorter stem for a week or so, I found the shorter stem really makes a huge difference on the 29ers.

Thanks all. I am really pleased with it.

Think I will try that shorter stem and see how I like it. I have gradually shortened the front end over the years (I am old enough to have fond memories of a 150mm 0 degree Syncros cattle prod stem on my DeKerf race bike!). Maybe try a 90mm and see how she goes.

Lovely bike, I'm quite jealous. The only thing for me is the Tundra saddle. Tried it - hated it 👿

That looks great, the proportions are so good. What weight did you manage, as you mentioned it it piqued the curiosity.

Lovely.

Lol at the bike in the bedroom.

85mm Easton Haven stem ordered.

Always used Thomson. Feel a bit naughty! They look good though. Strong, lighter than Thomson and cheaper on sale too! Anybody got experience of one?

BTW, haven't asked mrs solarider's permission for bike in bedroom. Will ask her in March when she thaws out. There wasn't room for her in the house what with the bikes so she is in the shed. You have to get your priorities right!

As for the tyres, we are about to relocate to Hong Kong, so I reckon the Racing Ralphs should cope. Not sure I will though. All that constant sunshine and no mud. No more cleaning the bikeafter every ride! Boo hoo!

I have a large Sultan with a pretty similar setup to yours OP (sadly not those lovely wheels though!). Changes I have made since first build are: 140mm forks instead of 120mm, 70mm stem and layback seatpost instead of the inline post and 90mm stem. Both changes have improved the bike considerably.

I've got Thomson and Haven stems - definitely prefer the Haven as they feel chunkier despite being lighter. I use a Haven 55mm stem with Havoc carbon bars. But I like to have matching seatpost and stem so I have had to buy a Reverb to get rid of the Thomson post 😉

oh and merlin were selling the previous haven stems in all black but I like the new 2013 ones in all black.

Very nice. I'd be interested in the weight too, I'm just waiting on a pair of 140mm Revelations to complete my black XL build (gone for some colour on mine though). I was after the X Fusion 34s but got impatient. Other than the forks mine is going to be heavier though, can't see it coming in under 30lbs (Superstar/Pacenti wheels, Reverb, M4s, Hans Dampfs etc).

You should take it out in the snow, going to be much worse when it melts! My mate loaned me his Orange 5 for a spin this morning, had a great time

Lovely looking beasty. My 2011 comes in at 29.6lbs, but it has rather more aluminium on it than yours!

I went XT for the cranks on my "black" build, only because i thought they looked better than the more shiney XTR ones. And you need to black anodise your shifter mounts, and you can get a black chain too.......... This weeks OCD is BLACK 😉

New stem fitted and about to go out and get her dirty. 85mm Easton Haven instead of 110mm Thomson. Feels a bit cramped compared to my traditional riding position, but I know it will feel more manoeuvrable off road. Loving the Easton stem though. After years on Thomson only, it is lighter, burlier and has a wider clamping surface.

Oh, and the name's gone ChunkyMTB.

I bloody love Gardening Leave!

Very nice indeed, think only thing I'd change is to a dropper post but depends where you're riding it I guess!

Hi Solarider

How tall are you? Looking at a Sultan but torn between a large and xl. Currently riding a large 5 spot with a 100mm stem so keen to read about yours.

Cheers

Sanny

Apart from the blackness, this is pretty much exactly how i'd build one of these. Pimpass.

Sunny, if you run a 100mm stem on any 29er that's gonna feel very slow indeed. 70mm or less is ideal to quicken it up.

How tall are?

Sanny - you're an XL with 60/70mm stem I'd have said.

I am 6ft 1in. 33 inch inseam.

Having taken the bike for a trash, and had to straddle the top tube a couple of times in mud and on uneven ground, I would definitely not want an XL. It is quite a tall bike. Fantastic ride though. Some bob on the ups, but the CTD damping on the front and 4 stage pro pedal at the back make on the move adjustment a breeze.

In terms of length, since this will only be used off road, the reach is perfect. Very easy to throw your body around.

I have had a 29er hardtail before, and several 26er full suspension bikes including a Horst 5 Spot. This is everything I expected. On the plus side, it rolls brilliantly, takes everything in its stride and is very comfortable. On the down side, it can feel a bit sluggish and slow in twisty stuff.

The big revelation is the rear end 12 x 142 through axle. Amazing tracking. The front end tapered steerer, 34m stantions and through axle don't make as much of a difference as I thought they might, but heck, they look cool if nothing else! Not sure if this will make sense, but you only feel the suspension moving up and down, with no lateral flex to speak of. Probably the first FS bike I have ever had to feel that way. Amazing.

The front forks are 120/140 TALAS adjustable. The 140mm setting feels too much for the rear end and makes a nicely balanced enduro and cross country bike just too relaxed.

What else - overall a brilliant bike. Can't comment about how long Turners last because I am at least honest enough with myself to know that something else will come along long before it is worn out!

Interesting stuff solarider.

I'm curious to know if you've had 142x12 before, or a DW turner before, since the rear subframe is a solid piece and is pretty stiff anyway. I found there wasn't much difference between the 10mm t/a I was using and a q/r.

It just goes to show different preferences too, since I think mine is at its best at 140mm up front.

Not had a Turner DW or 12 x 142 before, so can't compare.

Didn't manage any decent downhill, where I guess the 140mm option would come into its own. For 'just riding along', 120mm with the 29 wheels seemed the most comfortable and responsive ride.

Still a bit of experimentation with pressures and settings before I get used to it.
