I'm after some cheap 29er boost wheels for Winter. Missed out on the SS 25% off custom wheels offer, but a wheel build of new boost hubs and EX25 rims still comes in over £100 less than a pair of Hope Tech Enduro.

Hubs: http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/switch-ultra-lite-boost-r-148-rear-hub.htm and http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/switch-ultra-lite-boost-r-front-hub.htm

Rims: http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/superstar-t-ready-ex23.htm

with the 25% off, I'd have taken a punt, but coming in at around £260 incl. spokes still seems a good deal unless you still have to hit components from this supplier with a rock 😉

Been running the front boost for a while, not much to say really it's been invisible in use.

If it's not urgent I'd hang on until they become a standard option, or until there's another flash sale.

Their daily December deals are pretty sweet - and usually cover everything you could want.

The standard Switch Ultra hubs are very reliable, if that helps.

Had the rims before. They are excellent. Can't comment on the hubs though.

I would wait until Black Friday, they will have some offer on (that's what I am doing). I am looking at the same front hub but on the XX27 rims

Thanks all - good shout on waiting for a deal. Not desperate so I think I'll do that.

+1

Got the ultras when they were released a couple of years ago and they've run faultlessly since then in all sorts of yorkshire slop

i'm looking to buy a similar set of wheels and have also considered superstar. Have you thought about the DT Swiss E 1900 wheelset? They come in at about £250 for the wheelset and that includes tubeless tape, valves, 6 bolt adapters.

rim is the DT E 512 (25mm internal) and hub is a fancy version of their 370 model which is similar to the superstar one. Weight is slightly better than SS too.

think the best pricing is from www.tweekscycles.com

I got some Switch Ultralite boost hubs with Ryde Trail rims last year as a spare set and they have been good. Survived some pretty crappy rides inc submersion at the Dfyi this year and a very heavy crash and still smooth and straight. I think with a 25% custom whhels discount code around this time last year they were about £170. IIR about 1700grammes.

I have these in 27.5 boost form, and they are very impressive for a "budget" wheelset.

About on par with the Switch/DS25 wheels for stiffness and weight.

Those E1900s look good. Bit weighty but excellent value. Shall have a ponder..

@akira - thanks. I'll get some wheels ordered

@1timmy - Ta, but II don't want rims that wide for winter. And I'm not buying anything from On One again!

£190! Happy with that. Might even buy myself some new tyres. Not sure I can go back to 2.0 Beavers. DHF/DHRII combo might be a better choice...

Just turned up. Ended up switching to DS25 rims. Looks a good build with tubeless tape already fitted. Impressive to order Sunday at 6PM and arrive today esp as they have to build them. Shall fit tyres later and I've 'em a slop-test on tomorrows night ride.

I just built a pair of Superstar Boost hubs on to WTB i35 rims using Sapim Race spokes, cost £236 and weigh 2075g.

No rotors or cassette. DS25 rims, brass nipples, Sapin not terribly light but cheap spokes

Front: .975 kg
Rear: 1.11 kig

So about the same as @thesurfbus up there. Since they'll be covered in mud all winter, that's fine with me. And I'm going to stick some pretty chunky Maxxis rubber on there. Still be lighter than the Hope/I35/Rekon 27.5+ on there at the moment!

And there you go

Loads more clearance out back. Better mudguard coverage, DHF/DHR combo should be better in the slop. Feels strange tho. See how we get on. Oh and Airshot's are fab. Beaded both first time.
