You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi gang, hopefully this is a simple one - I've just installed new Shimano MT 410 brakes on my bike. They came with the levers detached but ready to install, just slide in the hose and tighten up the nut to compress the olive, easy enough.
The front brake is fine but the back brake has almost no free stroke. I can pull it back about 1cm, then a second pull will only go back about 5mm before fully locking the pads against the rotor. When the brake is released the wheel spins freely, I just want more range of motion before I lock up the brake!
Is this just a case of too much fluid in the system or did I mess up somewhere? Full disclosure, they came euro style (front left, back right) but switching the hoses round shouldn't have made a difference, I've done that before and not had an issue.
Appreciate any advice!
try bedding it in, a few runs might give you the travel you want
obviously if it's lever position, wind it in a little
if you're not happy with either, pop the fill port put the funnel in and see if you can push the pads back at all
So, did they come Euro style, or come with the levers detached? 🙂
sounds like you've gambled with swapping the hoses without bleeding, and lost the gamble, Give them a bleed, should be fine
Sounds perfect to me 😂 Before free-stroke adjustment became a thing I'd overfill my old XTs/XTRs to get that sort of bite.
Haha, yeah, I like firm/grabby brakes, but it's nice to have them feeling the same each side!
I didn't bleed as these were both fresh out of the box, ie just remove the little yellow plugs in the lever, insert the hoses and tighten as per the Shimano guide. My guess is the left lever was over filled so there's no play in the system.
I'll give them a few rides to see if they get better, but I will probably want to shorten the hose anyway so can see what happens after that. Cheers all!
