I've just put brand new rotors on my hardtail, they are the same spec as the old ones. The front 180mm is as good as gold but the rear 160mm is a nightmare...the caliper will not centre and when I get close the brakes make a kind of grinding noise. I have checked the pistons, cleaned everything and still it won't work. aaahhh!!!
Please help this is driving me nuts!!!
Floating rotors? If so, may they're rubbing on the caliper or mount?
Have you checked trueness of the disc - you can straighten them with an adjustable spanner and a bit of care.
Or maybe pads are worn down and the pad spring is rubbing on the disc?
Could be many things-when you say brake caliper won't center is it physically getting stopped by not enough free movement across it's bolts? Could the noise be the 'tinkling' of the brake springs curling out a bit and rubbing on rotor?Is the rotor grounding out on the caliper body as if it needs a washer to move it upwards and clear?Is it plain old mechanical in incompetence( I this doubt it but.....you never know) that could maybe cured by joining me for a ride on new trails you haven't yet seen on Wednesday Morn......if your about ?

In cases like this, I find it's best to disassemble the whole thing and check everything (disassemble means take it apart, not just look at it, BTW). Is the rotor properly mounted on the hub? Did you dislodge the pads when you refitted the wheel? Is the wheel properly aligned in the dropouts? Etc. IME, it's usually some simple little thing that you didn't notice.

Has the caliper taken a set against the bolts so keeps dropping back into the same position?
However, if it's a like for like swap (brand, model and size) that shouldn't be an issue. More likely one of the other reasons listed above.
This could make sense...the caliper does seem to move out when I tighten it....the old calipwrs were quite worn, so the ne one is probably a little thicker.
Do the caliper bolts have a washer under them? Â If not try one, it might help prevent the caliper moving when tightened...
Tried that, taken it all apart several times, inspected every aspect that it could be....off to the LBS I'm sorry to say. I have better things to do with my time.
