I’m doing a fairly long ride for me at the end of March:
Portsmouth - Newhaven 60m
Dieppe - Paris 100m
Paris - Caen 150m
Thinking about the best top /combo for the weather/ ride and peoples suggestions:
What I already have:
Castelli long sleeve Gabba
Castelli Perfetto gilet
Rapha winter jacket
Rapha windproof jacket
I’m thinking the winter jacket will be too warm for the ride at the end of March. Which leaves the other choices or I’m happy to buy something else as I’d probably prefer a less skin type fit of my Castelli tops.
Any thoughts on a suitable top or combo? I’d like windproof and breathable.
It's absolutely impossible to know what the weather will be doing at the end of March. It could be pretty warm or it could be snowing.
For typical Spring conditions I'd be looking at wearing a normal short sleeved jersey, base layer vest, arm warmers and then also carry your gilet or windproof jacket. That kind of combo is pretty versatile and adaptable. Also consider some knee warmers for the early morning which you can take off as it warms up.
Unless it's forecast a lot of rain your Gabba is likely to be overkill and you're right to say that the winter jacket is likely to be too warm.
it could be wall to wall sunshine or pouring down. who knows.
for a typical early spring long ride I tend to where nano 3/4 lengths, nano arms, short sleeve base layer and either a ss gabba or prefetto. with a race cape in back pocket.
The Rapha Brevet range is worth a look too, ideal for those changeable conditions.

I'm coming round to this approach as well, hate race capes (or at least the ones I've tried) as they feel horrible once they're wet and sticking to your skin, but if you have lightweight arm warmers on then you can avoid the worst of that experience.
Interested in the Santini Rain Guard jacket as it sounds like a lighter version of a Perfetto, i.e. still softshell but minimal insulation. Haven't seen one in the flesh yet.
As above: could be snowing with icy headwinds, could be basking in the 20s (didn't we have a heatwave last March?)
Personally I couldn't get on with the Gabba (too narrow a weather window between too cold and too sweaty) or gilets (if it's chilly enough to use one then it's chilly on my arms too). For multi-day rides I tend to have a mesh base layer; a short sleeved jersey; roubaix or wool arm warmers; and a long-sleeved, water-resistant windproof shell (over roubaix 3/4 bibs). If it gets colder I'd have a wool base layer; if it's colder still I'd go for a winter jacket in place of the jersey and arm warmers; if it's going to be chucking it down then I'll have a full Gore Paclite jacket instead of the windproof.
But everyone's different. In any case, you've got plenty of time to keep an eye on sale bargains and then make a decision in March once you've got a better idea of the weather.
Stolen Goat Orkaan short sleeve with their arm warmers and no base layer, with a waterproof jacket (I use a Rapha core) in the pocket would seem ideal to me.
The Stolen Goat Orkaan is Bioracer Tempest. Excellent kit. Although I would always wear a base layer. Short sleeves, arm warmers, shorts and leg warmers or maybe knickers.
Oh and @Bez no heatwave last March. Instead rather a lot of snow and wind.
Maybe it was the year before, then… or I might be losing my marbles.
Either way, late March is still a lottery; I’ve been toying with a similar route at the same time 🙂
My normal spring kit is:
Short sleeve jersey
Short sleeve baselayer
Arm warmers of some kind
Bib shorts
Knee warmers
Toe caps on my shoes
Cap
Gillet
But as above, March is so changeable that it could be minus 2 or plus 20. I'd be making a call closer to the date when you know what the weather might be.
Forget buying one thing from Rapha buy some basics to cover all options from decathalon, will cost much much less and cover more basics.
I’d be thinking more about base layers. Your gabbas will be fine if you have s long sleeve layer and a gilet for cold wet and a short sleeve layer for roasting. A race cape like the tiny Endura will keep rain off when needed.
I also have a long sleeve road jersey not the Wind proof type, an ordinary jersey. I’d look at one of those for middle weather.
But think about your base layers rather than just the jersey.
I find this surprisingly capable when not wearing my Gabba (long) or Bonka. Other colours are available.
And yes. Baselayers.
Thanks all, much appreciated.
Got an endura pro sl long sleeved top, it's partly wool so keeps me warm but pretty thin so not too warm. Base layer underneath for cool days, windproof baselayer for bit more warmth and then gilet as when needed.
For me, I tend to wear pretty much the same thing throughout the winter and into Spring (Temps sub-zero to 10 degrees). And that's:
Baselayer.
Fleece lined bibs.
Fleece lined long sleeve jersey.
The baselayer is one of the most important parts, and I'll put a summer mesh one underneath if on a big ride.
I’d like windproof and breathable.
I'm really not sure such a thing exists. Personally, my own experience is that it's beneficial to wear something warm yet lets the wind through and keeps you bone dry. In fact I'd argue cool and dry is better than warm and wet. It's that moment when you've been stopped for 20 minutes, and you get back on the bike shivering, that you discover the real value in quality winter clothing. Lots of stuff will keep you warm on a short ride, but the minute you stop in near freezing conditions with a back full of sweat is the minute you start your race against hypothermia.
Windproof/waterproof for descents, gentle riding and rain only.
Pack a warm jacket for long stops and emergencies.
