PlanetX haven’t had the 33mm Jack Brown tyres in stock for a while, I’m thinking of getting some Specialized Roubaix 32mm tyres to replace them, is there anything else worth considering for Road / mild Gravel riding?
I've got the Roubaix
No problems so far, they held air well from day one and haven't punctured yet
Pretty light if I remember correctly, and were cheaper than most other things I was looking at at the time
+1 Roubaix Pro 2bliss here. All good.
I'm after similar tyres and am interested in the Hutchinson Sector.
I'm using Panaracer Gravel King Slick on my winter & summer bikes. Light weight & tubeless.
I'm in a similar boat. Looking for a gravel wheel friendly road tyre as my son has "acquired" my road bike.
I'm on Fulcrum 900 DBs with a 19mm internal width.
Fulcrum's website says down to 25mm but thinking about 28s as availability of tubeless options seems wider and that seems to be as wide as I can find those Roubaix in. Does that seem right? I'm not as familiar with road / gravel rim and tyre matching as I am with MTB.
Went from byways to overrides. Seem equally supple but better damped, and none of the weeping sidewall rubbish.
G One Speeds. I use 35s for road and they're highly pleasant, and I'm liking them much more than the Gravelking Slicks I previously used.
My 35mm Gravel king ss, used with tubes, seemed very puncture prone
I’ll check out the specialized Roubaix
I had 2 sets of 32 Hutchinson Sector and was very pleased with them, now they are hard to find. Just moved onto Schwalbe Pro One in 32 and these are an improvement in terms of confidence inspiring grip and speed, not too sure how they will wear but for now very happy. The Schwalbes were a doddle to mount tubeless which is always a bonus....

@infovore Would you be prepared to expand on this at all? I was just about to buy a pair of GK slicks to put on the gravel bike for winter road duties, I'm now questioning that decision!
@Bazz well... what it comes down to is I hated sealing the GKs, and they were quite puncture-prone (see above), and they didn't plug back together brilliantly. And, so far, the G-Ones went up fast, seem to be a nicer rubber/compound, and I just trust a bit more. That's it. Otherwise, they're rubber that hits the road and grips it nicely.
I will be completely honest and say that sometimes tyres feel like superstition - what works for you works, and you can only go on what you know, and other people's superstition alongside yours. I know a lot of people who like GKs, I'm just not one of them. (I know another forum where the 'friends don't let friends ride Gravelkings' line exists, for instance). I liked them for a while, but then I had a string of bad luck with them and went to Schwalbe, which are just working out well (and friends with other G-One varieties are also very satisfied).
@infovore Thanks for that, i'm currently running G one All round's in 38mm width, and I'm generally a Schwalbe fan as they have all ways worked for me. I think I may look at some G one speed's now😀
Not sure if the OP has bought anything yet but my LBS had Giant Gran Fondo (in 28mm so slightly under target size) at about £45 each. The hold it before you fit weight seems ok.
I was going to go for some spendy Conti's or Schwalbe but it was almost 2 for price of 1.
First ride out tomorrow after a squirt round the block earlier but they went up with absolutely zero drama tubeless with the Airshot and a glug of Stans so fingers crossed my penny pinching has worked and they're ok.
I’ve used Roubaix 2Bliss in the winter and GP5000 S in the summer (as they’re a bit more fragile than the Roubaix(s) for my riding).
The Contis are quicker (both in 32), but the Roubaix are hardier (and cheaper if your tyres get sliced by the shite state of the roads the council deem acceptable).
If you see any on offer - stick up a PSA…
I’ve not tried the GP5000 S on Gravel, but did ride the previous version (GP5000 TL) on light gravel and they were fine.
My mate swears by GK SS’s - not a fan of any GKs to be honest.
I've got conti 5000's 32s and 30s on different bikes. Ride very very nice but a pain to get on. One wheel of the 4 goes flat in 48 hours. I think it's just too tight to seat properly. I'm in trouble at the point I need to fit a tube miles from home. But at that price, what can you do, they owe me miles. Yes they are the tubeless ones.
For contrast, no problems with the g one speeds I had before, they were not as supple/grippy, but cheaper.
@disco_stu If it's any good to you I have a pair of the Planet X Jack Brown Blue Tan Wall 33.3mm that you can have for postage. Used once but I found them too draggy for my commute bike.
GP 5000 S TR 32 are a substantial improvement over Sector 32. They roll better, wear better, grip better in the wet and are lighter.
I have Vittoria rubino pro tlr in 30mm, previous set wore down to the carcass with no punctures, and much better wet grip than the sectors. A bit awkward to fit, need an airshot.
I have just fitted a Continental Grand Prix 5000 All Season Road Tyre to my road bike and yesterday rode a 200km audax on it.
Very impressed - fast with good grip and easy to fit. I have a 25mm with tubes on a DT Swiss rim - £40 from Wiggle.
The larger sizes are more expensive.
I like the G one speeds too. Were easy to mount, even on non- tubeless rims. Ride is very good. But the front one punctured and didn't seal. Needed patching from the inside and I can't be bothered with the mess! So now has a tube. And of course decent tyre levers because they are so tight!
Initial thoughts on the Gran Fondos
90psi, 95kg of me.
Well they are a lot better than the Vittoria Trail Techs they replaced as a road tyre, although the pressure has definitely firmed up the ride.
I strongly suspect that some GP4000 or GP 5000s or G one speeds would be nicer and a little less harsh but they feel quite capable for someone who's likely to be a lot more careful in the wet.
With my preference for road use being a ride dominated by unclassified roads that may be strewn with gravel and grit I think they will be a decent compromise of not taking damage and grip while not emptying my wallet of an extra £70.
I ride GP5000 on gravel in summer.
Not a great start to using these tyres, a puncture within a week of using them, and also maddeningly impossible to remove on the Hunt 4 Season wheels so I had to walk / train home yesterday evening 🙁
@neila is that offer of the Jack Brown blue still available - it would be much appreciated if they are?
I just stuck WTB Exposures (in a 36 - smaller sizes are available) on the commuting wheels for the gravel bike.
I have some Jack Browns somewhere that I use for seating new tubeless tape. Not sure which ones but they never appealed.
@disco_stu yours if you want them, email direct @ neilallard77 at gmail dot com
