Hello! So... quite probably not the most unique build you'll see around here, what with the recent On One deal, but my first step back into the world of MTBs for almost a decade and I'm super excited to be back on some knobbly tires.

I have been buying a mix of second hand/bargain bits and have a few questions about the compatibility and some potential options for the brick walls I seem to have hit:

1. That 'clearance' for the chainring (32t) and crank arm looks a little err... tight?! Is that just me or do I need some spacers in the BB?

2. Brakes/Shifter. I'm wondering what the best way of mounting my new 11spd XT shifter is. It's an I-Spec B type mount and the brakes are an older XT model. Now, maybe I just need to suck it up and by a bar-type clamp shifter, fine, but I'm wondering if there's a way to get this one working as it looks strangely close to fitting or like it should. Somehow. Maybe the pictures below can explain better than I can:

As you can see there's a 'hole' in the brake lever (it's not threaded) which seems to line up perfectly with the shifter when placed on (what looks to be) a 'track' for it. Surely this is meant to work? It's a perfect fit. I've tried fitting a bolt through from the shifter side into the back of the bar clamp thread and then using a second bold for the normal bar clamp closure, however it doesn't appear this thread is long enough to accommodate two bolts.

Any ideas on this? Hacks/bodges most welcome!

Look forward to sharing a full build once the 254th Hermes delivery has been made...

Thanks

1x driveside spacer on mine (shimano FWIW)

No idea about i-spec, other than I've heard there are about 3 different versions of it

at a guess you need a boost crankset too? I bought one but not fitted yet. I also bought a 34t oval ring which.... might have been a mistake....

Needs boost chain set and yes 34t ring fouls 🙁 I tried. You Could bodge with more spacers driveside I guess but it will mess up Chainline.

Excuse to buy some newer brakes the ispec b is neat 🙂

There should have been a bolt that goes through from the shifter into the brake mount. It uses a square edged nut that sits in a groove in the brake mount, you have to mount the shifter to the brake then the brake to the bar.
