Hello STW

I have just bought some replacement fixings for my SKS AL edge mudguards. Here are the bits in the pack:

Now I know what to do with the first three - left to right - but what is the little spiky washer on the right for? It doesn't seem to fit anywhere. Here is a close up:

Do I just drop them behind the shelf and pretend I never saw them, or will this cause my bike to spontaneously combust once I reach a certain speed?

It prevents the nut from unscrewing i think.

lock washer.  goes under the nut.

Thanks, that seems like the obvious reason. However, the washer does not fit into the recessed space for either the nut or the bolt, and the bolt is not long enough to ‘catch’ the nut if the washer is placed at the recess.

I guess I could force the washer in somehow, but I don’t think the nut or bolt would fit once I’d done that.

Hmmm - the usual place for a lock washer would be under the nut where the stay goes onto the fork leg / frame

Yeah, I think it goes on the bolt that goes into the fork eyelet - either under the bolt head (probably), or between the stay and fork. Never seen them used there before though, but they can come loose. Did the guards come with them originally?

It's a lock washer. If that's a Nylock nut I would suggest it isn't needed.

Yeah, I think it goes on the bolt that goes into the fork eyelet

Or this - so it belongs under the bolt in the other end of that arm.

Thanks everyone, I see what you mean now.

Yes, the nut is nylock so wouldn't need a locking washer.
I cannot remember if the original fixings had the washer or not - they certainly aren't there now. Maybe I had the same issue last time and didn't use them.

So, I think the washer goes between the bolt head and the mudguard-to-frame fixing. You're only supposed to tighten it 1nm, so I guess it could work itself loose. That all seems to make sense.

Thanks again.
