So I have maximum £400 budget so have found the following bikes but wondering which ones are the best bike for the money, some I have seen myself, 1 I have been advised is decent on STW.
The contenders:

I feel a new bike will suit my friends needs as he is completely new to the sport but want to get the best bang for buck, if anyone can think of any other contenders then let me know, budget is strict at £400 though.

I'd go with the Kona from those three. It's a 9 speed cassette on the back so will stay more "current", the others aren't. They also offer a lifetime warranty on the frame, http://www.konaworld.com/warranty
You'll get a Spesh Pitch for that money
Pinnacle for me - same geometry as the Iroko which is a great frame. Kit is functional and serviceable - if a drivetrain wears out (they al do) can always replace thereafter, but many bikes at that price don’t get the use that may be expected.
Strict at £400? Close, but for an extra £26.80 using the likes of Quidco (3% cashback at Halfords) you could get this -
Voodoo Hoodoo with Deore disc brakes, Deore 10 speed, etc.
