Hi,I am after a bike with following requirements: 29er, quite quick for XC style riding, not into big drops or jumps, decent ish fork and tyres. Got around £1000 to play with. Been looking at these two and wondered if anyone had ideas on them or other suggestions:

https://www.orbea.com/gb-en/bicycles/mountain/alma/cat/alma-h20

Or

https://www.scott-sports.com/gb/en/product/scott-scale-965-bike

Thanks.

Canyon Grand Canyon, I have the 6, really like it. Feels quick even if I am not.

I like the look of the Calibre and comes with good components but it may be too aggressive for my needs. It’s quite heavy too.the Grand Canyon could an option.

As with all these recent threads, have you looked to see if your choices are actually available anytime soon? In many cases it's "what can I buy?" rather than "what should I buy?".

I’m willing to wait for the right one. Just like doing some good research off the back of some suggestions- which is why I posted on the forum.also my two suggestions are available.

Out of those two I’d take the Orbea and if you can afford the optional fork upgrade I would definitely do that. Get you to a SID from a Judy for under £300.

The Scott is unnecessarily steep in the head angle, has a shorter head tube which is very low, has a shorter reach, higher bb and downspecs the drivetrain slightly.

The Orbea is still quite XC but I think it’ll be a bit more stable and fun, whilst still being really quick and efficient at pedalling.

There obviously are other options but I’m not massively up on my xc style bikes. Not too many for £1000 certainly.

This is key, especially as the around £1000 market is where a lot of people are buying.

Both of those look fine for XC style riding and I ride a similar geometry bike myself. Just get the one you like the look of most which matches your component criteria the closest and hope someone has one in stock.

Mrs Ready got a Merida Big Trail 500 a few weeks ago. £1200 I think it was. It's a very decent bike!
Although I would also keep an eye on the classifieds as there's a few of the bikes bought in the summer lockdown becoming unloved and unwanted. You might find a bargain!

The Merida Big Trail is one I saw. Looks really good. Is that XC or more trail?

"the slack enduro inspired 65.5 head angle and 140mm fork delivers a fun confidence inspiring bike" would suggest not really XC and not one I would choose for XC riding.
