I’ve just got a new Rockshox Revelation RLT and I notice the Maxle seems to different from the one on my 2009 Reba. There’s no internal shaft and tension nut on the non-lever end. The expansion fit now happens on the lever end of the Maxle. Has anyone got these and if so, do you know if the non-lever end is supposed to be open to the air or plugged with a cap of some kind?

I had quite an experience with merlin when I bought a set of revs with a new maxle as it just didn't make sense to me. It is supposed to be open ended and you tighten it with an alen key in the lever. Definitely don't have as much confidence in the new design as if you don't have the lever tight enough it will come loose whilst riding and its harder to judge how tight it should be

Just got mine last week and didn't like the look of it. It's no different fundamentally to the old one, except it traps the hub between the fork legs rather than the fork leg on the drive side and the raised bit of the Maxle on the other.

Don't really like the completely open end, but much lighter than the old one. Just don't leave any water sitting in there

Edit

Definitely don't have as much confidence in the new design as if you don't have the lever tight enough it will come loose whilst riding and its harder to judge how tight it should be

Don't see why its a problem. Just like a QR - wind the allen key adjuster up till you can only just close/open it, then its tight enough

I've got a 15mm Maxle like this

TBH I didnt give it a second thought. Adjust the lever tension with an Allen key, screw it in and flip the lever. Tension is the same every time. Works perfectly, better than the Maxle on my Lyrics I reckon 🙂

Just looked at mine, am i right in saying that there is nothing to lock the thread into the left leg, and all the flip over bit handle bit does is act like a lever to make it tight?

Half right- the lever clamps it up, which is what keeps the thread in the left leg. Fundamentally the same as the old Maxle, just with a different preloading method

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I've had a play with the 2.5mm allen key and I've got the tension so that closing the lever leaves a temporary imprint on my hand and it feels about the same as my old-style Reba Maxle. Now the proof of the pudding with be in the day to day use.
