Hi,

A mate has just managed to get some new XT 4 pots and is ready to fit them, do they use olives? He says they've come with fluid but the lever is separate with a yellow plug, in the pack is a pin but no olive. Is the olive behind the yellow plug or is it missing?

Thanks,

Yeah, they have standard shimano hoses with the required BH90 olive and barb i believe, well that's what i used anyway and they work ;o)

I can't help with where the olives are, but there's a good chance he'll need to trim the hoses; they'll be needed either way (perhaps they are already in the lever).

Shimano used to supply their brakes pre-bled and connected up (although again, it was usual to need to trim the hoses). I think that the brakes are still pre-bled (the yellow plugs keeping the fluid in) but are supplied like this to allow them to be fitted to internally routed frames.

Pretty sure it's behind the yellow plug. 👍

I'd just get a couple of sets of BH90 barb/olive, they cost a couple of quid, and are useful for spares.

When i got a set like yours (OEM with the yellow cover), the olive was in the packet from merlin, but it might be behind the plug, just remove it and see, it's only there to stop any rubbish getting in the lever prior to fitting.

I had a brand new set like yours with the yellow plugs, the olive was already placed in the lever, so when you insert the hose it is already where it needs to be.

Just make sure you cut down the hoses before connecting up if needed, otherwise you will need to obtain a new olive.

AS above the olive is already in place in the lever.
Cut hose to length, insert barb, insert hose and tighten.

Just be careful the hose is seated well as mine looked okay but after a day at the bike park I lost my front brake on the last run because the hose hadn't quite gone into the olive properly and it was leaking fluid.

Yup, I've fallen foul of this. Wandered all the way to the local bikeshop in the pouring rain to pick up some more, then pulled the yellow plugs and swore. Wonder if olives used to get lost from the boxes, so started supplying them in a more secure location.

Excellent, I'll get him to check behind the plug.

Thanks all!
