[Closed] new (loose) ball bearings - all the same or some better?

Not what you'd call a ground-breaking question but there you go.

All equivalent or are there some balls that are better than others?

Need some 1/4" ones for some rear hub rebuilds (XT)

There are different grades of bearings, made from different material/finish and to different tolerances ([url= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_%28bearing%29 ]link[/url]). Try for at least G100. SJS Cycles do G25 ([url= http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/ball-bearings-dept428/ ]link[/url])

I have heard that putting one ceramic bearing in each side keeps the races smooth and polished.

Has anyone ever tried it?

I remember ebay used to have ceramic balls but I did a recent search and nowt came up (UK that is).

I haven't tried it, but I also heard that a single ceramic bearing will indeed help to keep the races free of defects that would otherwise damage the steel bearings. I'll see if I can dig up a link...
